Mike,
Device managers shows manufacturer as FTDI, Version is 2.8.30.0

I did go to the site you linked before and downloaded CDM2.08.30 WHQL Certifed.zip. When I opened the CDM v2.08.30 WHQL Certified.exe file the zip contained it started an installer. The installer started to do it's thing but stopped very shortly after and displayed a dialog box entitled "Get Last Error". The box contained the text "The requested operation requires elevation."

I'm using an evaluation version of WinZip. Is this a WinZip thing?

Did you extract the zip? Windows has zip functionality built in, and has for years. Get rid of winzip entirely, get 7zip installed, and open your plain zip files with windows.

That's odd. Before I installed WinZip I tried to open zip files . Windows wouldn't but pointed me to WinZip. I'll try 7zip, whatever that is.

try change FIFO buffer to 0, that is what I had to use for MS. Also try a different baud rate. 9600 is painfully slow but if it works..?

Robert,

Try uninstalling the driver you have installed, and download and install this: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20830_Setup.exe

You will need to go into the Device Manager, right click on the COM port that Windows assigns to the FTDI USB Serial device and left click on Properties.
Next you will need to left click on the Advanced button, then change RX and TX Buffers from 4096 to 64. Next click on the Apply button, then the OK button.
No other changes should be necessary. You will want to reboot your computer after applying the RX/TX buffer change.

The reason you had the problem with the .zip file and the .exe file it contained is that it needs to be run as an administrator. I find it easier to use the .exe file I linked above.

build question

Post by pishta »

Is there a superceded part number for the VND7NV04 MOSFET? Its obsolete and no one has them in stock but Farnell UK and thats an extra $20 to ship them to USA.

How to reduce cost of home build

Post by pishta »

If you are sourcing parts for your bare board or SMD kit, here are a few tips:

1. Get your AMP plugs from http://www.te.com as free samples! That saves about $25 right there
2. Get the AMP plug crimps in Tin instead of Gold, that saves almost $23. (or try to get 35 included in the sample..)
3. The 1N5818 in Line 20 is available for .06/pc at Newark.com. That saves $3.50 opposed to buying them for .30/pc from digikey.
4. There are a few other components available sourced outside of digikey at reduced costs but its time consuming to shop like that.
5. The enclosure listed is a perfect fit and pretty inexpensive. In fact you can use about anything as an enclosure if the EMS is in the cab away from the hostile engine compartment.
6. Source LEDs from other projects. They are everywhere and dont wear out. I know they are cheap new but if you got 'em use 'em!
7. flow your FTDI FT232RL chip off a cheap Chinese USB serial adapter with a hot air gun. you wont need it anyway with this setup. I found one on a serial-TTL adapter I bought a few months ago for $3 shipped. Perfect part number!

i included an updated partial BOM with a few new prices to look at. Also first MOSFET P/N is discontinued so we will need to look for a new part number.

SUCCESS! ! !

You guys walk on water!

Andy,
I followed your instructions. Things went like clock work.

Mike,
EMS Studio connects right away, interrogation is successful in ~ 5 seconds.

Andy again,
How does my proposed pin out look? I'm looking forward to downloading some firmware (hint Fred), connecting to my "superstim" and badgering Mike about how to configure things.

You can use this part, it is the RoHS compliant part # for the VND7NV04:
ST Microelectronics VND7N0413TR
