Fred +1

I will try to help as I can, most of my Debian setups have been 32bit so far since I'm using machines that aren't 64bit to begin with. I think this may be some of Harry's initial issue trying to setup Ubuntu, although I have not tried to use Debian 64bit or Ubuntu 64bit OSes for my FreeEMS Workstation setups.

I only use Windows 7 for CodeWarrior (only for the hiwave.exe debugger and the TBDML support) to flash the initial Serial Monitor and to generate the PDF files using CutePDF, then I use Debian 6 (Squeeze) 32bit for KiCAD, building the freeems-vanilla firmware, Sean's loader and MegaTunix.

Harry:
I have been updating my FreeEMS Workstation document since I just recently acquired another older laptop and want to have it setup the same way as my netbook. Just let me or someone else on IRC know what you are having a problem with and we will try to help out. :-)

You don't need a 64 bit kernel on a 64 bit cpu, not even if you have lot of RAM. I use a 686-pae kernel on this box with core2duo and 8 gig. Having said that, we can't know what's wrong, because we haven't been told. Fill us in, Harry :-)

The last two weeks I was fighting my laptop
I was trying to put Debian on my machine so I could follow the notes deuseEFI made
Those same notes dont work for Ubuntu

Win 7 cant find the DVD player in my laptop so I cant boot from cd wile I am in windows
If I use the Debian.exe it installs fine ,makes partitions and some times it can find my wifi
But then it reboots and every thing is gone, and I mean every thing
And as we all know to re install Win7 takes a lot of time and isnt much fun
(I did it more than 10 times the last two weeks)
The only Linux version I can find that kinda works on my comp is Ubuntu 11.10
And that is the .exe one you can download on the Ubuntu.com site
The nice thing about Ubuntu is that all the versions are not the same, they look the same but are very much not the same,so looking for info is kinda hard, the wiki is written for 10.04 (I think) and that version has other terminal commands and has the terminal in a other place and more of those nice handy things
Ubuntu heats up my video-card a bit,it is getting so hot that the comp shuts down (never had that whit Win7),and when that happens I lose Linux and cant uninstall it in windows so a re install does not work and I can look for the Win7 cd to re install
So Ubuntu 11.10 it is
Whit new video-card drivers and the restricted extra Ubuntu kinda works okay

As for the freeEMS soft ware well I nearly had it working last night
I could some how edit the sources.list file ,i put the line from the site in the text editor and save it
And did the other steps
At the end it gave an error,i think it was some thing about a file for 64bit it could not find

This morning I got up and gave it a other go
I wanted to put the errors in a post here so I could find out what I am doing wrong
The post was nearly ready and then the comp was getting to hot and I lost every thing ones more

The command I used before is: sudo gedit /ect/apt/sources.list
And now it gives me a clean document
And in the terminal:
harry@ubuntu:~$ sudo gedit /ect/apt/sources.list

[sudo] password for harry:

(gedit:1902): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.F6U69V': No such file or directory

(gedit:1902): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or directory

I dont know how to change the sources.list

I think I gave it a fair fight but the comp is the winner
I gif up
And that is why I am Grumpy

ok, I think we are getting somewhere, you are trying to run Linux while running Windows 7, that is good to test it out as a runtime, but I have not had success with it working long term. I run into problems with accessing the USB ports and the serial (COM) ports when running a Linux distribution as an .exe within Windows.

If you follow my document from step one with a blank hard drive and only allow Windows 7 64bit to install to half of the available hard drive space, then reboot the computer with either a Debian 32bit or Ubuntu 32bit netboot CD OR you could use unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to create a bootable USB thumb drive and boot up with that instead of the CD.
I highly recommend a 32bit Debian or Ubuntu OS to work with the files for this project.

I have used both ways (CD/DVD and bootable USB thumb drive) before and if you are having trouble with the CD/DVD drive then the unetbootin method may be the best way for you. If you follow my document from the beginning you to have both Windows 7 64bit and Debian/Ubuntu 32bit on the same computer. You will have to reboot to change between the two and the Debian/Ubuntu installation will be able to read/write files to the Windows 7 partition.

And in the terminal:

ok, it looks like you just have a typographical error in the command, try:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
gixxer-harry wrote:(gedit:1902): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.F6U69V': No such file or directory

(gedit:1902): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or directory
These look like errors that gedit couldn't create a file, most likely since it doesn't exist in your directory structure.

If you have it to the point where you are able to use the command:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

then add the sources from my document then you should be good to go, otherwise you might consider using unetbootin to create a bootable Linux thumb drive (about 512Mb is plenty for a netboot version of either Debian or Ubuntu 32bit / about 8Gb is plenty if you want to copy all of installation DVD #1 onto it.)

I hope this helps 8-)

Thx Andy for trying to help me
I am sorry to say that I am to dumb/stupid and to old to understand what your writing
If your writing that I have to use a other version of Linux that I am out of luck
I been trying that for the last two weeks and I failed (makes me Grumpy)

Ubuntu only has is own map on the C disk in Windows its not running under Windows on my machine (the Ubuntu map is the partition?)
I have now a dual boot system on one partition

I tried that same usb program from the link and I cant get it to put Debian on my machine
I am sure it easy but I cant do it

I dont understand what you mean by “most likely since it doesn't exist in your directory structure”
I dont know what to change and how to change it

The commands for Debian arnt the same as the commands I have to use in Ubuntu
I think I have to put sudo in front of every command but I am not sure
So I cant use your notes and thats why I was fighting whit Debian in the first place

But thx for all your help

Maybe some one who knows Linux a little better can help me and not just give me a link to the freeEMS site
I dont know how to perform the first step
I dont know how to get to get to the point that I can change the sources.list file
I cant find it on the net, cant find it on youtube and I cant find it in the Wiki
I asked about it on a Dutch Ubuntu forum and they told me to get in tough whit the maker of the program

Or I have to wait till there is software that even I can install and maybe use

I am not that Grumpy any more,i just feel old and stupid now

Harry, a few things:
  1. Sometimes getting Linux up and running isn't easy, even for the best of us!
  2. Once you get past that, your noobness is a real asset to the project by way of feedback and "why it's not easy" type stuff that we are blind to. See quote below.
  3. I'd be perfectly happy for you to keep running windows 7 only. We need a full stack of tools for windows and users should not be forced to run Linux. So that's probably the best option for the time being. Pressure from you is what will drive the developers to make their stuff work and work well, nothing else will do it.
  4. You could start by running linux in a VM. Install virtual box on your windows machine, get ubuntu 32 bit into that, and play with it until you're comfortable. Doing dual boot can be temperamental, trust me, i've had my share of issues.
Honestly, in terms of getting used to Linux, start with a VM, it's zero risk and perfectly usable for most stuff, highly recommended.

Re being old/noob, read this:
open advice book wrote:As a new contributor to a project, you are an invaluable asset not for your knowledge, but for your ignorance. When first starting work in FOSS, nothing seems (to you) so obvious as to be unworthy of mention. When you encounter something truly frustrating, realize you are in the spectacular position of helping make sure the next person who comes along does not encounter the same difficulties.
Trust me, we NEED people like you to make the system better! :-) Just try to be patient with us!

Harry, calm down man! You're amongst friends.

I did tell you what to do. Stick with Windows 7. You can load new code using it, you can run mtx on it, you can run OLV on it, what else do you need?

If you want to learn Linux, I told you what to do then too: Install virtual box and a Linux VM and play with it.

If these steps are at the wrong level, tell us where you are at?

BTW, just noticed you're talking about a laptop, laptops are always the hardest thing to get running Linux. That could be a large part of your issue for what it's worth.
