my other vehicle is a '99 dodge ram quad cab 1500. 20 feet long with a minimal computer and a 5.7L. Has SLT and just got in its second accident. My wife hit a bush going 65 on bad traction. I bought really good tires for it so it must've been bad. That's why my insurance deductible is low and my cars are well insured.

End result, your engine doesn't have VVT at all, according to the internets.

Wikipedia says 1995 - 2004 for your truck with that engine. Even if it did have VVT, engines of that generation typically only had on/off solenoids in them. This type of VVT is already supported in FreeEMS <3

IE, your engine should be a piece of cake to get running. And, as a bonus, you're already most of the way there with the jag built and working mint.

It has been a long time since your last Jaguar build update, how is your Jaguar A3 integration coming along?

I now have over 1600 miles on the FreeEMS S10 with my Jaguar A3 in it.

My attention's been more on glam rather than gusto since it turns out I'll be moving to Kansas in several weeks. The only time I can tool around is usually after 10pm and I don't want to drag heavy metal and car parts in the back of a moving van.

I've been keeping my apps up to date and the A3's loaded with the latest master firmware, but I may have misinterpreted the language on wiring up for Hall. I'll get back to testing the build this week and put progress up here, questions in #freeems.

^ Not much has happened with the truck since arriving in Kansas, though there's an offroad park nearby that I'm looking forward to visiting. Got the rear a little more dressed up for the occasion.


But I've digressed for far too long. The real reason I'm here is to install a custom ECU.

^ Here's a spare Toyota ECU that was pulled from a Tacoma at the dump. This will be my source for both case and connector.

Before going any further with wiring up the Jaguar, I'm tuning up the Tacoma for better reliability. It wasn't well maintained over the past 10 years and I'm driving it hard, so it won't do to have it soil itself in the middle of testing (or in a cornfield over 50 miles away from civilization).

^ Out with the old: NGK Rs replaced with NGK IRs. Despite major wear, these look good.


Tomorrow I'll post some news on the Jaguar. Hoping to have the engine running in place by the end of September.

Good choice on the iridiums. Don't worry about the cracking until one lets go. When it does it'll just run on 3, no biggy :-)

Well, probably with plenty of arcing and rough engine behavior, but that's the spice of life.

I spent most of today feeling pretty ill and didn't make much progress. I'm motivated though and really want to get this done, so in an attempt to hold myself accountable and be more visible, this thread will start to see more activity.

The Toyota ECU's been hacked up so that the stock PCB sits firm in the case with elbow room for the Jaguar. I've cut the connector leads and have been soldering and heatshrinking wire directly to them. This brings up an issue though: wire gauge for injectors, coils, fuel pump, etc. I've seen a variety of wire used in peoples' projects and in some cases I think the choice was "just good enough" for proof-of-concept runs. I'm also having issues reliably mounting the Jaguar into place, but that's not high priority at the moment.

This upcoming weekend includes a national holiday on Monday, Labor Day, so it'll be an especially good time to labor away. Hell, it's almost tempting to just grab the crimpers and a bunch of alligator clips and rack up on Skype minutes with you folks.
