Re: Fred's 1991 Volvo 240 Wagon

Post by Fred »

The other day I was driving along and bam, I noticed the odometer and trip counter were moving! These have been stopped for 75%+ of a tank/450+km and no change was made to the car to get it going again. The step-wise movement is still there, as with my freshly fixed 740 odo, but it's working again! :-) Why? No idea.

Still need to pull the dash back out and fix the tachometer which is still very dead. Probably dry caps I guess. Or a dry joint. We'll see.

Tonight I've left her park lights on to kill the battery so as to be able to fully charge it from flat tomorrow. Feels a bit weird. Should do it a little good, though.

Some other lovely pics on there without the Volvo which I might stuff into the "slacking" thread shortly.

So, I drive 1500 km in this, all over northland for a week, no issues. Come home and park it on the grass for a wash. Start it up to move it to clear some stones out of the grass, leave it idling just there, come back a few minutes later to find the oil light on! Killed it immediately. Restarted. Light went out with a little flicker. Gave it a rev, light comes back on. Killed it again. Checked connection, seemed loose, pulled it off, key on no light (ground to light). Put back as best I could. Restarted again, light goes out with a flicker again. Rev it again, stays off. Park it sensibly and come inside. Sulk.

Internet and some people on the other side of it tell me some orings on either side of the pump can be the cause, and a bad sensor also. Need to find a reasonable gauge and validate the light before panicking. Bleh. Three Volvos all out of action for various reasons.

Just ordered a harbor freight oil pressure test kit straight of tardme in NZ. Should know the fate of the B230F in the 240 wagon within a week or so. Dun nun nun. At least then I'll know for sure what's up and how bad it is. If it is bad, that'll accelerate work on the caravan project as I can't get the car in for an extended period without removing the caravan first. Also can't get the Starlet indoors at home until then, either. Pressure is mounting to finish the caravan to a high enough standard to be road legal and street parkable.

I miss driving this beautiful thing! Need to pick up the pace or I'll lose access to a parts car for it, which would suck, as that car has far better headlights!

Oil pressure kit arrived the other day! Not the one I ordered, though, and not with the contents it was supposed to have, but perhaps it'll be sufficient. Gauges look OK. Hose looks OK. Fittings are more sparse than they should have been. Time will tell.

This morning sim showed me a picture of his oil gallery plug, butchered with a cold chisel. I'm filled with optimism, now! :-D Will add that picture to this post later if given permission.

If I can't get the plug out with reasonable force (see that optimism shining through?), I'll just pull the sender and find a matching fitting to go into that hole, instead.

M14x1.5 oil pressure switch is out thanks to slacker Cam and his rapidly provided 24mm deep reach socket!

https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 3603665920

I'm planning a "sunex 2646" deep reach impact socket set purchase any day now, so I should be OK without having to borrow them soon. The pressure test kit came with 9 instead of 15 adaptors, and none of them are m14, let alone m14x1.5. So I'm on the hunt for that, then I can finally validate that it has low oil pressure and sulk some more about the massive hassle it'll be fixing it:
Sigh. I guess I should order all of the consumables up front. I'm guessing something like:
  • Two seals for pressure feed tube from pump to block
  • One oring for pick up tube to pump
  • Sump gasket if I *have* to run one (RTV only is OK? Jap engines are all like this, none leak...)
  • Other SOHC block has an oil pump is this one turns out to be bad
  • Fitting to weld into sump for oil return from compulsory turbo to be swapped on after oil pressure recovered
Any advice welcome.

If it were me I would definitely focus on getting a 100% valid oil pressure reading first, before throwing $$ and parts at the problem.

Agreed! I'll know the answer to that tonight, with a bit of luck. This came today:

The final piece required to measure the state of the poor old B230F!

With the bad news in hand, I'll get in touch with my Volvo man and get some bits ordered.
