Fixes prior to trip away: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 2711569408 (still not completed...)

Got her good and dirty: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 6042997763

Did that here (and elsewhere): https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 5515555840

No footage of the Volvo on the oval has emerged, yet. Fingers crossed some exists.

It also managed a burnout on the skid pad visible left of the light blue citroen. But with the help of oil...

Gave her a good wash down from head to toe tonight. Will try to get under and clean out the nooks and crannies more at some point as I couldn't do it very well here today with just an ordinary hose.

Towing the ute with the A-frame was OK. Details on the ins and outs of that and much more can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16&p=39766#p39766

I had a bit of a fit up of the 17" wheels today, without tyres, and measured a few things:
  • The back has more space than the front.
  • The back requires 20mm of spacing to reach the same lip position as the current stock 14" wheels, with an extra inch inward of the stock inner lip.
  • The studs on the back are 27mm long and the front looked about the same.
  • On the back, with 20mm, there was 40mm between the lip and the guard lip (without rolling).
  • Rolling isn't very useful, as the shape rolls in quickly anyway, so it won't buy you much/anything.
  • Up in the cavity the inside of the back goes vertically almost all the way to the top with a sharp radius.
  • Whereas on the outside the radius is much softer meaning at extreme travels there is less width available and less track required.
  • On the front the same 20 just clears the strut.
  • But on the front there's not as much room outside the wheel as on the back.
In summary, I think the best place to start is a 30mm spacer that clears the studs and exceeds the inner clearance minimum and gives 20mm more track and slightly fuller looking guards. Maybe 40 or even 50 could work, but 30 seems like an initial safe bet. I might try to order something inexpensive to try it with.

Tyre size wise, I think maybe 215/45R17 will be closer to correct than the 195/65R14 tyres that are on there. Stock is 185R14 Speedo is 10% optimistic at 100kph. so 10% more diameter would be ideal to correct that and also cruise at 10% lower RPM for the same speed.

Stock 185R14 is 25.6"
Current 195/55R14 is 24.0"
215/45R17 is 24.7"
215/50R17 is 25.5"
Not sure what other sizes might be suitable. Rims are 7" wide, FYI.

More interior parts getting fixed! https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 8376393729

I also have the tools to reinstall all of the interior parts again, now. I should get onto that... maybe tomorrow. It's on my list, but not sure where. Certainly overdue.

Aside from that the Volvo has just been an absolute star! Super smooth, torquey for towing, roomy for moving things, comfy for cruising, warm in winter, quiet, gorgeous car. Will never sell it.

Still keen to rebuild the auto with a shift kit/mods, and a new filter, etc. Still keen for LSD and better wheels/tyres/sway bars/shocks, etc. Still keen for some mild 15 PSI boost and 98 RON fuel. Still keen to FreeEMS it (the factory ECU is quite shit, actually). But none of it is a priority. I need to write code for you lot (and for me, too!).

Did a small road trip in her yesterday to pick up some new 16" wheels. This was the view from the guy's place:

And these are the wheels:

They're cast and made in Japan. They have screw on valve stems unlike most wheels. The rims have been home-job sanded to a brushed look (not bad) with a few imperfections. I need to give them a *good* clean and scrub and get some appropriate tyres for them and try them out.

Uh oh, I just bought my third set of extra wheels for this car, and I've still not even taken the existing set off the car once! I need to get some spacers to fit up two of the sets I've bought, but not the above 16" ones. I think these latest ones suit her best, though:

I guess time will tell.

These should arrive at em_knaps place tomorrow!

I pulled the bonnet latch out of it tonight to lubricate it, as it wasn't relatching consistently, and have decided to give it even more of a tidy up. Pics to come.

A nice little surprise when I went to pick them up earlier: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 4248280065

And a good shot of an entire wheel: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 5131301888

Not all of them are so mint, however they're certainly all restorable. And if they look great on the car, that's exactly what I'll get done.

My goal for all of my cars is to have a set of winters (UHP summer tyres, for wet conditions), a set of summers (road legal semi-slicks), and a set for WOFs (whatever cheap shit fits). If one set of spacers works for both these and the other 17" FWD offset wheels, then likely these will get the slicks and those will get the UHPs. The stockers can stay with sufficient tread for WOF duties and I'll likely sell the 16" ones that I just bought.

I'll head down now to measure the back-spacing on each of the two types of 17"s and see how compatible they are with each other.

Wheel summary (Wheel, size, width overall, flange to back rim depth):
  • BBS 17x7.5": 212mm 150mm
  • Volvo 17x7": 203mm 150mm
  • Japan 16x7" 203mm 122mm
  • OEM 14x6": ~180mm 104mm
So to put the back of the 17" wheels in the same place as the 16" wheel sits without a spacer would require a 28mm spacer. However I measured that I could clear the car with just a 20mm spacer IIRC. Who knows how that would go on the front while turning, though. I'd be interesting to fit some tyres that match my plans for the 17" setup on the 16" rims and give them a bit of a thrash to test for clearance. Seems promising, though.

Spacers are the next step, then tyres! Then I can post some photos of them on the car! :-D

Chucked various wheels on some scales earlier...

Both Volvo 17s (7 and 7.5 BBS) are 10.6kg each.
The 16x7" Jap wheel is 9.0kg
A stock FD3S 16x8" wheel is a mere 6.6kg
My little 16x4" alloy space savers are exactly the same 6.6kg
EDIT: Enkei RX7 FD3S 17x8" 8.4kg, 17x8.5" probably under 9kg

No idea what the stock 14x6 wheels weigh. Didn't weigh the ute's 17" enkei RX7 rims yet, either. But I will.
