Wanted - Mercedes Intake Assy

Post by TonyS »

Hoping that someone with a bit of experience can help me out -

One of my sons has a 1995 E300D that we wanted to play around with by adding an intake air heater to improve cold running performance during the period from when the glow plugs turn off / engine starts to when the motor has heated up a bit.

Rather than modifying the existing part (it's his daily driver), I was hoping to find the part we need on the internet to work with.

When searching for the part number, all the "hits" seem to be in Europe.

I was wondering if I should try to buy the part on a Euro Ebay site directly (I can't read most of the listing details) or ask a favor of a forum member to research the details of buying this part and shipping it to us.

The mercedes part number is 604-098-03-17 but I got more hits by eliminating the "-"s and just searching for 6040980317.

Please let me know if you can help us out.

Thanks,
Huff

Do you need a new or used part?
Where should it be sent to?

Hi Stefan,
A used part would be fine.
If you can find one, please let me know what the total cost (part+shipping/handling+your time) would be in US dollars and I can PayPal you that amount.
For shipping estimate, I live in zip code 60174 (Saint Charles, Illinoise, USA). I can provide you with the exact address via personal message if you are able to locate the part.

Thank you very much,
Tony

To Stefan,

Thank you very much for working on this.
If you ever need something from USA, please let me know.

Also, by any chance are you a mechanical / welding wizard?

We need to somehow weld an aluminum(?) bung (M22 X 1.5) onto this throttle body in order to accomodate the spiral heater we plan on using. I plan on trying to resolve this issue after we get the part, but just thought I would ask if something like this was in your skill set.

Thank you very much,
Huff

Cheeky! :-o But the smile would let you get away with it :-)

No problem, thanks for the offer!

Sorry, I don't have the skills or tools to weld aluminium, neither do I have a M22x1.5 aluminium bung. Can't seem to find one to buy either, so it'd need to be made on the lathe, but I don't have a M22 tap...
If I knew if aluminium could be laser-welded, I'd give the job to a buddy..?

All in all, yes I could make it work, but if you aren't sure yet where to put that bung 'n stuff.. maybe it's not the best if done here?

Just a note: Sometimes it's even impossible to weld cast aluminium because of its magnesium content. Know that from someone who welds motorcycle engine parts on an almost daily basis. That's another guy I could ask for the welding... all I need is a M22x1.5 tap for making a bung, or I just let someone weld on a pipe and the M22 is your problem?

Hi Stefan,

Please don't spend another second thinking about the welding / bung as we will find a way to do this here.
I wasn't trying to be "Cheeky" :D when asking about it, but with all the amazing / wild mechanical projects that I have seen on this site, I just thought that it couldn't hurt to ask and see if you were equipped for and love to do this sort of fabrication.

Thanks Again,
Tony
