I would say it probably has a poor common mode rejection. It doesn't uses a differential input for the signal wires. That will likely make it susceptible to noise issues and will require a fair bit of software filtering to correct. Seems like a lot of software work to me.

Are there advantages that this chip offers that aren't offered by the max224/5/6/7 devices? That diag pin catches my eye. I see it claims it can detect degradation or loss of the physical connector to both sensors. However, I suspect one can figure an open connection fairly easily, as it won't produce a signal. I don't fully see how it can measure a degraded signal path. It would appear the best it might measure is a variation of the input impedance perhaps due to corrosion. I doubt that will be an issue as the motor will have to function for several years before it has a chance of detecting such an issue.

I see the max chip's were first revised in 2008, the latest rev is 2009, this NCV chip was april of 2006, so I would claim the max chip is newer silicone.

Great post, Jared! It's good to know what there is available anyway, as the footprint of this is very small. Clearly what we need, though, is a page, thread, or wiki page, on VR sensors, wiring issues, chip choices, and general VR info. Then threads like this, for future chips, or past overlooked chips, can just be added to it.

it's more common to find in the 'cs' prefix. the 'ncv' prefix is for special tracking purposes used in the auto industry.

this is the absoultely wrong conditioner to use for missing tooth applications .. its intended for speed/abs pickups.

I use this chip on a setup with the avr 1280 and it works great for me. I have tested other crank decoding chips and this works the best for me.
I test on a bench with an actual Subaru 36-2-2 wheel and a VR sensor with absolutely no errors and I leave it running for hours. I also tested with JimStim
to 10k+ rpm and it still works great. I know many of you are much more knowledgable than me but I would not be so quick to dismiss this chip without trying it.
I am an electrical engineer but have never practiced (I've been in software forever) and that is why I used outside help for my board design. With my limited experience
I did look over many datasheets before trying this.

It's nice to know that it's working well for you but what would be nicer would be to know what else you tried and what results you had with those.
