serial usb replacement

has this been suggested/considered ?
i have one in my ms 2.2 board that just hangs around the bench and it's problem-free. linux and win drivers, just works.
DB9-USB-F is the model number. available on digikey at $22 a pop, pricy, but a fairly elegant solution where serial was once present.
