I just heard this from Intersil, figured I'd post it.
Hi Jared,Unfortunately the people with the expertise on this part have long left the company. I had some experience with this device earlier in my career and the HIP9011 was a spin of the original HIP9010 device. The HIP9010 has additional details about the test mode that should also be applicable to the HIP9011 device. Wow! That's a sad admission for a company to make! That its IP was lost and not transferred to a new employee or at least documented before they left. Wow!

On a quick look they appear to be an exact match to each other. Same footprint, pin out, and several parts of the general structure appear to be the same. I haven't compared the nitty gritty, but they look to be nearly exactly the same. I might wager a guess that because the TPIC is an exact match to the HIP chip, there's some kind of affiliation between the two. Perhaps one bought the other, or rights to the other, or perhaps they were built in the same china foundry and it wondered, who knows.
The Intersil datasheet is from 2006, while the TI datasheet is from 2004, so I don't know which would be the newer silicone. I see the TI chip explains some of the missing chunks of data. For example, it specifies that the on boot the SPI is in the default config, which is echo. It also lists a table for the diag/test functions when TEST is 0. I would wager a guess that the HIP chip would also work with that diag options of the TPIC chip.
That advanced mode is interesting. In advanced mode, a transmission is 16 bits long. You shift in 8, then it shifts out 8. I think that mode will allow the best verification that the data was actually received.

As usual, my question might be a bit offtopic... Does anyone know which cars use either HIP9011 or TPIC8101 in their stock ECU? Since I am visiting junk yards often anyway...

Siemens ECU in 2005 kia spectra uses TPIC8101
