I built a small regulated 12 and 5 volt power supply with a shared ground about a week ago, here it is :







And picked up a pair of 160x100 euro card gold plated strip boards for constructing basic test circuits on and a pair of 50 pin IDC SCSI one cables to connect them to the adapt board :

Ok, so the goodies arrived today, BIG thanks to Donna and Tony for bringing them into the country for me at the right price (UK electronics places are day light robbers I tell you).

Firstly, I needed a keyboard. Of course, it had to be a US layout, and although I'm a bit of a snob about spelling things the UK way and pronouncing them as close to David Attenboroughs way as I can, computers are an American thing, and thus should be laid out that way.

I test drove a UK version of this before buying, it's a nice unit :





Additionally I needed some tools that I didn't have, so I got one of these in from Japan via NZ :



For $30NZ/$20US/10GBP it is very nice quality. Box jointed and has zero play with flush cut. It's about time I got a good pair of flush cut nippers.

So, the tools compliment is basic, but complete with the possible exception of the FPGA based logic analyser that I can't afford just yet and won't need for a while anyway. Here they all are together and looking slightly spiffy even if I do say so myself! :



Additionally for RPM/engine position interpretation I ordered a JimStim from Jerry and the boys http://www.diyautotune.com, this is it unassembled :



And one or two components that I'll need for prototyping the new FreeEMS design :-) :

Well, the board works. It comes with the Freescale demo code for the xdp512 on it when its shipped. Using a simple watch/echo loop i made it flash at half a Hertz. Here's the video :

Perhaps later tonight I'll make more progress. There are some bugs to be ironed out of the compile parameters and/or the hcs12mem configuration and/or the serial to USB adapter.

The JimStim is built. Here are the pics :





It's a nice piece of gear. The only to slightly negative aspects are that the pictures in the instructions could be clearer (but you don't actually need them at all anyway) and it should include more jumper wires (9 more really). Considering that there are 12v, 5v and 3.3v headers available, I'm wondering why no ground was included. I can't see myself using them anyway, but it would be complete with those items :-)

EDIT : (with regards the bold text) Of course, if you look at the photo (thanks for pointing this out) in the lower left corner, crystal clear and with GND next to it, the headers that I was whinging about are right there and I simply did not see them. Apologies to anyone that may have taken offense to me thinking they didn't include ground pins.

I've passed that feedback on to the respective places. We'll see what they say :-) Still well worth every penny though.

Tonights progress was fairly pathetic, but I had some emails to attend to and some replacement kitchen parts to find too.

I did however grab a 16 wide IDC ribbon and hook it up to the bottom of the JimStim so that i can plug the JimStim into my proto board(s). I'll complete the test rig setup tomorrow and post some more pictures then. Here's a teaser in the mean time :
