Injector IGBT alternative/options

Post by davebmw »

OK guys i'm getting a bit twitchy about the ignition IGBT options available to us.
Personally i would like to use standard TO220, purely for the flexibility provided by the design in mounting possibilities and the excellent tried and tested heatsinking capability of the package.
Unfortunately PIH/TH designs are becoming rapidly obsolete in favour of the SMT variety I have spent a couple of hours going through my accounts with semiconductor manufacturers and trying to find options available to us:

VB921 OBSOLETE what is hanging around is grey market or possibly counterfeit
BIP373 Super difficult to get hold of, unless you are bosch and you want 100K!
ISL9V5036P3 PIH/TH, End of life product, only 710 left at Fairchild, 1045 at mouser, it is expensive to get these parts without serious buying power due to excessive shipping costs. and fairchild charges for samples

NGD8205N-D SMD, full production, datasheet here: http://www.onsemi.com/pub_link/Collater ... 205N-D.PDF
FGD2N40L SMD, full prod, datasheet: http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/FG/FGD2N40L.pdf
ISL9V2540S3ST SMD, Becoming hard to get hold of, data here: http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/IS/ISL9V2540S3ST.pdf
BIP355 SMD, Same as BIP373 logistically.

If we have to restrict the PCB design to SMD we have several serious possibilities that are quite accessible.
OK those are the serious contenders I have come across this evening, have you guys got any more potential candidates?

Or do we consider using mosfets with blocking diodes (not Back EMF) and Varistors clamps to replace the ignition IGBT, because quite frankly this is a niche market in the semiconductor industry, it makes DIY efforts difficult logistically and could be a little irritating to all.

These things DO get hot. Putting them on in SMD is asking for trouble IMO. Remembering that NO OEM uses on board igntion drivers... all are in the engine bay in a module or in the coil itself now.

Basically if we can't get to220 we should design for logic level drive on the PCB only. This is what MS3 is doing and I believe for ONCE that they have it right.

IRGS14C40L is available in to220, people are using them.
