IMPORTANT Jaguar A3, 0.4, 0.6 & 0.7 BOM & Parts Kit Error

Post by Fred »

Hello All,

johntramp stumbled upon a part error in his 0.7 kit today and I verified it in my 0.7 kit too. The part wrongly supplied is a 68nF capacitor that should be 6.8nF in value. Using this wrong value will cause your clock to be of dubious quality. My high quality firmware will protect you from this issue, however it could make your jaguar behave in an unreliable fashion. Please do not install the 68nF capacitor in location C7, and if you did, please carefully remove it and replace with one with the correct value. These should be good quality caps, however should be easy to find locally for a few cents, so I don't feel that Andy should have to remedy this. Please post in this thread to confirm that you have read this and will make the necessary change.

Using the wrong value will result in a damping factor of 2.25 instead of 0.707. 0.7 to 0.9 is the recommended range for this figure.

It's also possible that 0.6 kits were affected, I'm yet to hear from Andy on this subject. It'd be worth replacing if this is the case.

0.6-alpha kits have been confirmed to be affected too. All such units should be repaired immediately to avoid weird behaviour from your engine.

I'll artificially create a post by Andy below to record a check list of 0.7 and possibly 0.6 kit owners to ensure everyone is aware of this issue.

Re: Jaguar 0.7-alpha Parts Kit Error IMPORTANT

Post by DeuceEFI »

All,

This affects every Jaguar board to date as the error was in my calculation from nF to uF 2 years ago. I was off by 1 decimal place.

6.8nF != 0.068uF

6.8nF == 0.0068uF == 6800pF

You will need a 6800pF, 50v , 5%, NP0/C0G, -40C to 125C rated ceramic capacitor.

Here is a link to the proper C7 capacitor: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... ND/2815322.

I have corrected this value and the appropriate manufacturer part numbers/Digikey part numbers in both my Jaguar and XDP512 Development Board repositories on github.

A big Thank You to both johntramp and Fred for finding this mistake! :)

The 5 remaining Jaguar 0.7-alpha orders on my bench will have the updated component installed before they ship out.

The following users should update C7 on their PCBs as soon as possible:

Andy, delete the above when you edit this :-)
I hereby confirm that John and myself are aware of this and personally pledge to notify em_knaps and GURLB8 about this too.

EDIT: The blue cap in C7 location with smaller C9 in front of it is the one in question. This is my 0.6 setup and I believe it's wrong too. I've been having some PLL issues for a while, this explains it nicely!

Please add lists of the recipients of the three affected boards so we can start checking them off to ensure that no one gets missed. This is important as if not fixed it could tarnish the reputation of the entire project.
