To modify Jaguar, or build new board??

Andy's GM DIS centric hardware design! Also works as a fuel controller for EDIS and distributor applications.

To modify Jaguar, or build new board??

Post by E4ODnut »

I currently have several engines running a highly modified version of MS1-Extra code with a modified V2.2 MS board and daughter board for additional I/Os. I would like to be able to build a FreeEMS unit as a plug in replacement so I can do a comparison to see which system works best for me.

My first problem is that I'm not familiar with Github and don't know how to view the schematics and PCB layout. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Once I can study the drawings, perhaps then I can determine what changes I would have to make in order to be able to use my TFI ignition and other I/Os that I have, or if it would be better for me to design a new board, based on the Jaguar design, but modified to fit my requirements.

Please post your exact IO requirements, accessory loads, current feature set in use, etc, in detail, for the target engine, which ever it is. We'll go from there :-) Transparency = no bad surprises...

As for git, I told you the basics 2.5 days ago:

(22:20:19) Fred: http://code.google.com/p/msysgit/downloads/list
(22:22:13) Fred: Git-1.8.3-preview20130601.exe

(22:23:49) Fred: context menu
(22:23:54) Fred: git bash here
(22:25:58) Fred: https://github.com/fredcooke/freeems-vanilla/
(22:26:11) Fred: git clone git://github.com/fredcooke/freeems-vanilla.git
(22:26:30) Fred: git fetch
(22:26:40) Fred: git merge --ff-only origin/dev

Same deal for jaguar, and you need kicad as well.

No stress :-)

Kicad: http://www.kicad-pcb.org/display/KICAD/Download+Kicad

Jag: https://github.com/DeuceEFI/Jaguar

You putting in the effort to describe your stuff reduces the work for Andy and I and thus shares the load around and allows more time to be spent on important stuff.

At present both engines in my road vehicles use the same hardware.

Pulse inputs for:
- Profile Ignition Pickup (hall sensor in distributor)
- Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (flyback from coil to confirm actual ignition timing)
- Vehicle Speed Sensor (8000 pulse per mile variable reluctance)

ADC inputs for:
- Manifold Absolute Pressure
- Manifold Air Temperature
- Coolant Temperature
- Throttle Position Sensor
- Battery Voltage
- Exhaust Gas Oxygen
- Fuel/Ignition Trim
- Barometric Pressure

Logic State inputs for:
- Decel Fuel Cut Enable
- Fuel/Ignition Trim Select
- Knock Detector Input

PWM outputs for:
- Injector Channel 1 (3/4 HiZ injectors)
- Injector Channel 2 (3/4 HiZ injectors)

Current sink outputs for:
- Fuel Pump Relay
- SparkOUTput (TFI ignition module timing control)
- Accumulated Injector Open Time Totalizer (Open Collector)
- Program Loop Counter Frequency Test Point
- Accel LED
- Warmup LED

The engines in the boat are a bit different.

Pulse inputs for:
- Profile Ignition Pickup (hall sensor in distributor)
- Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (flyback from coil to confirm actual ignition timing)

ADC inputs for:
- Manifold Absolute Pressure
- Manifold Air Temperature
- Coolant Temperature
- Throttle Position Sensor
- Battery Voltage
- Exhaust Gas Oxygen
- Fuel Trim
- Multiplexer Common Output
- Ignition Trim
- Engine Oil Pressure
- Fuel Pressure
- Exhaust Gas Temperature

Logic State inputs for:
- Ignition Trim Enable
- Fuel Trim Enable
- Knock Detector Input

PWM outputs for:
- Injector Channel 1 (4 HiZ injectors)
- Injector Channel 2 (4 HiZ injectors)

Current sink outputs for:
- Fuel Pump Relay
- SparkOUTput (TFI ignition module timing control)
- Accumulated Injector Open Time Totalizer (Open Collector)
- Program Loop Counter Frequency Test Point
- Engine Alarm Relay
- Multiplex input "A"
- Multiplex input "B"

If I had to do it all over again I'd probably stay with the TFI ignition on the road vehicle engines but I'd prefer to go with EDIS or COP for the boat to get rid of the distributor. EDIS 8 modules are hard to come by around here. Coil packs, not so bad. If FreeEMS could handle EDIS module duties (I think MS3 does) then that would be great. I haven't studied into COP as of yet because it's not feasible with my current hardware.

Wish list for a FreeEMS board would probably go something like:

Pulse inputs for:
- Profile Ignition Pickup (hall sensor in distributor) OR:- Ignition input for EDIS or COP
- Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (flyback from coil to confirm actual ignition timing) (not rqd for EDIS or COP)

ADC inputs for:
- Manifold Absolute Pressure
- Manifold Air Temperature
- Ambient Air Temperature
- Coolant Temperature
- Throttle Position Sensor
- Battery Voltage
- Exhaust Gas Oxygen
- Fuel Trim
- Ignition Trim
- Engine Oil Pressure
- Engine Oil Temperature
- Fuel Pressure
- Fuel Temperature
- Exhaust Gas Temperature

Logic State inputs for:
- Ignition Trim Enable
- Fuel Trim Enable
- Decel Fuel Cut/Exhaust Brake Enable
- Knock Detector Input
- Exhaust Brake Permissive
- Decel Fuel Cut Permissive

PWM outputs for:
- Injector Channel 1 (4 HiZ injectors)
- Injector Channel 2 (4 HiZ injectors)

Current sink outputs for:
- Fuel Pump Relay
- SparkOUTput (TFI ignition module timing control) Or:- Required ignition outputs for EDIS or COP
- Accumulated Injector Open Time Totalizer (Open Collector)
- Engine Alarm Relay
- Exhaust Brake Relay

AWESOME! :-)

I'm super busy until end of Wednesday with two engines to keep/make happy. How about a skype on Thursday or Friday to explain some of the eccentric things in there, and for me to explain some things that just don't exist here? :-)

All good. I'll be away from my computer for about a week anyway, I'll get in touch when I'm back. Have fun with your engines.
