Getting Dev Bench Test Hardware

Post by Fred »

Draft, to be filled out more...

Adapt XDP512 CPU card :
This is the CPU for FreeEMS and essential for testing anything.

Specs :
Order the AD9S12XDP512M2 with both connectors specified as FM type :

Image

Please add a comment telling them to ensure that the connectors are correct. Without these connectors the CPU card will not plug into the main boards.

You do NOT want yours to look like this :

You want them to look like THIS :

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii15 ... 0_7093.jpg

Buy it from here :

Price (at last check) :
125 usd + shipping and duties etc

You will also need a plug to attach power to it, buy this one and cut it in half to get two :

JimStim :
The JimStim is an engine simulation device developed by James Murray and Jean Bélanger. It can output trigger signals to imitate various OEM cam and crank wheels.

JimStim prices (at last check) :
59 - 65 + shipping etc as kit
88 - 95 + shipping etc built and ready to roll

Once you have all of the parts you will need to perform some minor modifications :

TBC

remove regulator
bridge regulator
build quality 5v supply
connect the jimstim and cpu together (adcs, rpm etc)
setup some LEDs on the key pins for monitoring it's status (use jimstim ones if desired)

TBC

This thread is a work in progress.

You should put in a comment about the connector to ensure you get the right one :
Abe wrote:""*PLEASE* make sure you get the connector right, I want the "FM" style connector on both headers. Thanks.""
Shipping costs:

Shipping is 19 USD to the USA, not sure about other locations.

Finally, Abe is joining the crew of testers and hackers :-) :

Ok i got my TA card and i have a JimStim ~
  • For bench testing what all has to be built?
  • Can the mcu connect directly with the jimstim?
  • I would think some circuits would need to be built for testing of actual hardware like coils or cas / triggers setups?
  • Safe to think that for hardware tests follow Ravage circuits may wait for more clarity on parts i may need ?
I noticed this is more a draft so maybe some more details will help. I'm still waiting on parts too for some perf boards and connectors.

[*]For bench testing what all has to be built?
Depends what you want to test!

[*]Can the mcu connect directly with the jimstim?
Yes, if it's setup correctly. Wrong setup = dead CPU, though, so beware.

[*]I would think some circuits would need to be built for testing of actual hardware like coils or cas / triggers setups?
Yes.

[*]Safe to think that for hardware tests follow Ravage circuits may wait for more clarity on parts i may need?
Yes, ravage is fine, the PDF and the TODO.md together form a good base for any design, home brew or otherwise. Parts are just TH versions.

Is there examples / schematics/ pictures anywhere ? Whats your test rig look like?

Ok whats the minimal setup to protect the cpu fot tests?
[*]I would think some circuits would need to be built for testing of actual hardware like coils or cas / triggers setups?
Yes.
I might just build everything once i get all the parts.

Might be useful to start a thread listing Ravage parts and trough hole compatible parts.
I got my Connectors today on another note.

Same as RavAGE and Sim's build, schottkies to rails with current limit resistor in front.

There is a whole thread of that, dig back a page or two in freeems hw and look for "hardware development thread"
