Here is a list of compatible through hole components for TA/DIY builds.

• MAX9926UAEE+ ( VR Circuit ) ~ I believe this is the only option for through hole at this time. http://www.jbperf.com/dual_VR/v2_0.html

DFH used to use a very similar chip to the MAX VR chip, a LM1815 it comes as a thru hole, but doesn't have as good of a common mode rejection, and has some mild problems with skipped tooth wheels.
