I feel your pain on the RS232-USB garbage out there. I went through about 3 resolders and a few chip and cap swaps until I said "F-it" and went to an old laptop that still had a serial port on the back, straight DB-9 cable, bingo! FTDI chipset is supposed to be THEE chipset to use. Prolific and all its clones are trash. Great read, has motivated me to log my build as soon as I can.

FTDI is over-priced. CP2102 is a serious chipset too. PL2303 is a piece of junk, yes.

Would you use the FT232 (BOM call out) over the CP2101 if cost was not considered or is the CP2101 pin compatible for the 0.6 Jaguar board?

CP2102 only comes in packages that aren't very DIY friendly, hence use of FT232RL. Both work fine. Be careful soldering the FT232RL as it soaks heat to the core very quickly and is easy to kill.

Offtopic: I really like the new FTDI FT230XS bare-bones USB -> Serial chip. Very simple BOM: only need decoupling / filtering and Windows finds drivers automagically. Also in DIY friendly SSOP package. My standard choice now :)

Ontopic: Does the car run fuel injection yet ?

The Snot Rocket has been fuel injected since summer 2013.

Now, with forced induction:

Still running the worn out B21A. Hope to get the minty B230F installed in the spring.

Fred.
Heh, the intercooler is from an Izuzu NPR cube truck. It is very
close to the stock Volvo dimensions, but with a thicker core and
all aluminium construction. That is a stock Volvo intercooler
bracket holding it in. The intake air temperatures barely
move in the logs. No matter what I do to the car, the intercooler
should not be a problem.

The TD04HL-15G turbo, while tiny, is a couple of sizes bigger
than anything Volvo put on a RWD car. It's made out of parts from
various FWD stock turbos. Plenty of boost for now. Especially on
this tired old motor.

I guess it is not surprising, but the VE took a huge dive as
compared to the NA 4-2-1 manifold/downpipe. It is a pretty small
hole to shove all of the exhaust through.

When the new motor goes in, I have a 19T compressor kit for the
turbo that should be good for a bit more boost without
superheating the air. That is probably (hopefully?) all that the
clutch and transmission will take.

I'm already gathering parts for the motor after that. It will
have twice as many valves, and some lighter pistons and rods. I'm
going to find something with a twin-scroll exhaust housing for
that one. That is a few years and a transmission swap away
though.

The $15 air filter is just a temporary stop-gap until I get
around to modifying a stock box to fit. It makes ridiculous
sucking and whooshing noises.
