I have a lot of eastern european friends from serbia and croatia. When I was at uni we used to hang out in the quad and they drank coffee and smoked etc while I ate cookies and drank chocolate milk. There were some renovations being done at one point and ramset guns being used to put nails in concrete. Each and every time one went off several of them ducked for cover. They were genuinely scared. Bit of an eye opener for a naive kiwi ;-) Perhaps that guy had been nearly hit a few too many times?

My mother always looks up when loud jets are overhead. In Isreal in the 60's, you had to have good internal IFF - if the jet wasn't American in build, best to get under cover since they DO bomb.
