MegaLogViewer Whinge Thread - feel free to contribute!

Post by Fred »

I decided to use MLV to review some old logs to get some idea of RPM/Second for research purposes. I'm shocked, horrified and annoyed by what I found. All I can say is I'm damn glad I still have an old version without this "great new feature" :

And my personal favourite, button location switching, WTF, spot the difference :

I thought MS was for the good of all and "open source" ... yeah right.

Several people have had a whinge to me about this program in the past. I never paid it much attention as the version I've used in the past didn't have this crap in them ruining it...

I also thought this might be interesting :
MegaLogViewer is distributed as Shareware, therefore you have the right to use it on a trial basis. If you find this application useful, you are obligated to registering.
Sorry Phil, I don't find it useful at all in it's current form.

Additionally :
Ideas and Solutions grants the right to distribute this software as distributed by EFI Analytics. Distribution with Non-MegaSquirt commercial products or for profit or benefit to any commercial entity must be covered by and agreement with EFI Analytics or Philip S Tobin.
Sounds good. This isn't a non-ms commercial product, nor is it for benefit to any commercial entity. So, by that file License.txt it is 100% fine for use to distribute MLV with FreeEMS, though I don't really want to. I'm tempted to decompile it and fix the "auto update" and "register now" bugs though. The effort would be better spent building a new better log viewer under GPL.

I don't find the nag screens to be a big problem...

Just used it last night to fine tune my fuel map. Works awesome.

I know of at least two people that think that the analysis features in it are second rate and far from awesome. I've enjoyed using it in the past for simple comparisons, but now that that happens every time you open a new file I find it fairly irritating for that purpose. I guess maybe I'm just not used to pop up stuff at all anymore. I haven't run windows or any win installers for nearly 2 years. There are no pop ups etc in Linux if you don't want them. No apps ask you for cash and play "swap the buttons" on you.

I realise it's not a big deal at the end of the day, but it's still shows poor spirit IMO.

I recommend not trying to use the key generator that is available via google, I just ran it in a sandbox for a laugh and it replaced about 70 dlls and exes in system32 LOL.

I was having a detailed poke around at it and discovered that it's using sun internal libraries. This is a big no no as they regularly change those internal APIs and specifically state that using them is not supported at all. Just changing from one platform or JVM implementation to another could stop MLV from functioning at all!

Good to see some of the accessory programs code meets the same standards of development quality as the main B&G firmware does lol.

Yep I provide support for an app that must run on 1.4.2.09 no more no less.

And I guess it's fixed on Solaris OR Linux OR Windoze too is it? lol, people should be more careful with stuff like that...

I'll tell you what else is funny, he's using the comm.jar package that sun discontinued ages ago instead of gnu.io.* that is actively maintained.

Surprisingly it works on windows and linux, its just that the farther you deviate from 1.4.2.09 the more it misbehaves.
