MegaSquirtAVR *IS* Free!

Post by Fred »

VEMS may have a closed license, but MSAVR is available for anyones purposes up to the point when the other guy got involved and turned it into VEMS. It is according to it's author Public Domain. That's nice as it means it can be GPLed and used. Most of it is no use to us though because it is a rewrite of ms assembly code in C for the AVR which is too close to B&G for my liking and also means that everything is done in the somewhat non-standard MS way...

What it does mean though is that we can look at what he did with the C specific stuff in there as inspiration if required. It also means that if someone else is braver than me, they could put up a site and revive MegaSquirtAVR in GPLed goodness :-)

I don't want MSAVR stuff hosted on here though, though you may discuss it freely in this section as I'd prefer it was treated as non-free given that it reimplements all the same algorithms etc as MS vanilla did.

Pretty cool that it's still around and free though. One must wonder why no one has pulled finger and brought it back to life earlier? Same reason 100% of the FreeEMS code is mine so far perhaps? IE, is everyone really that lazy?

It's only a matter of time before all that ceases to matter though as FreeEMS is taking leaps and bounds in the right direction!

Interesting news anyway.

Fred.

I am that lazy. In or out of context.

It certainly does lend itself nicely to some of the reworked hardware people have done, and gives them a venue by which they could share and discuss it.

Wow, the site is down! I may have a copy of it on my backup drive, but its VERY ms/gm to read in terms of how it works... just nicely laid out etc.

See http://romikselle.com/msavr/msavr.zip. Sourceforge CVS was already wiped clean earlier so files included are not latest published firmware.

johu thanks for that file! looks like all old MSAVR files are offline except through Internet WayBack Machine. Im currently working on porting it to run on arduino mega since the mega has a similar chip as msavr but with double the memory and more ADCs. obviously without any arduino libraries.

Anyone have more files from before vems went closed source? Which firmware version was the last open source version?

That vems wiki is really horrible

The VEMS system, in general, is horrible. The early versions are just M$ in C, so although it's licensed freely, it's not really free per se, however if you're not in the US you can likely do what you want with it. I still wouldn't recommend doing anything with it, though. MS2E > VEMS.
