Why I am bald. (Read: Why Microtech are shit)

Post by Nige »

  • Injector Drivers fail (blown engine as result).
  • Wiring harness connector terminals not seated fully from factory (annoying intermittant fault to find).
  • Shitty cheap connectors.
  • Internal relay fails.
  • Send back to factory to change engine/trigger/sensor configuration.
  • Impossibly to tune correctly. (Have to just run it fat due to lack of precision/fine injector control. This bugs me no end, possibly even more than the rest).
I'll add more as I remember, I try and stay away from these things but people keep buying them.

I especially love the "But xyz does a 7 second quarter with one!" [sarcasm]Yes, that totally means your street car will cruise and respond nicely.[/sarcasm]
He is running methanol and CDI, it takes a fair bit to actually not make power, and he doesn't give a rats about driveablilty.

I try and point out that Microtech ECU's are proven.... to be rubbish. And yet they still get one.
What is hilarious is that anyone who actually knows about ECUs knows this to be true, but they just get a sale instead of trying to educate the public.

They used some strange screw head for the ECU case so I was only able to look inside the hand controller.

Horrible pcb layout, messy assembly with flux residue everywhere, but at least the silkscreen quotes make up for it - although it appears they never got far from where they started.

Sidecutters grip the ECU screw heads fine.

What is it with these 90 degree angles in traces I keep seeing.. appalling considering the ease with which even the most basic layout tools allow us to make proper angled corners.
I also dont get why they go with such fine traces when they have all the space in the world.
Then there's the flux.. must be all hand soldered because a wave soldering machine doesnt leave any flux residue as far as I know.
In the end though, it's just a controller and it probably wont suffer much from poor design practices.. I would be more worried about these imperfections inside an ECU.

Do you really expect the ECU itself to be much different/better? :-D Optimism is a fine quality in a person. I applaud you.
