As AncientGeek put it, TheAnswer++. Damn him. :-)
She fired up tonight for the first time at about 9:02pm NZ time, ie, 2 hours ago, to the minute.
At very first only on ether from a can of start ya bastard. Then I realised my configuration mistake and corrected it and splutter splutter vroom.
But:
1) Major oil leak from idiot light sensor FIXED
2) Medium oil leak from rear main seal PENDING - storage may have dried it out, there was no oil in the sump - may recondition itself with use
3) An alligator clip was holding an essential part of the ECU loom together as I'd forgotten to connect it at first
4) The timing seemed to be 20 degrees too advanced - will dial this in properly tomorrow evening, caused a high 1300 RPM idle with low airflow from no PWM idle
5) No PWM idle - need to research which pin it's defaulted to and upgrade my firmware version and connect the wire up
6) VE set flat to 60 degrees meant for a slightly tough start, but smooth running thereafter, needs richening up a bit, gut feel
7) Lifters are clattering like a bitch - but they did when we picked up the car 3 years ago, too, so I think they'll come right
8) Various other noises and smoke and so forth - need to fix most of the above and give it another run with daylight
9) No wideband! Guess work FTW this time, just like #1 the first FreeEMS car, the USA road trip Volvo 740 Wagon!
And in spite of all of that, it ran smooth and idled after only a short run and managed 5020 RPM almost cold (sorry engine!).
Not bad! :-D

Initial evidence, videos to come:
