Fred's 1988 Volvo 240 Sedan 16v (#43)

Post by Fred »

As AncientGeek put it, TheAnswer++. Damn him. :-)

She fired up tonight for the first time at about 9:02pm NZ time, ie, 2 hours ago, to the minute.

At very first only on ether from a can of start ya bastard. Then I realised my configuration mistake and corrected it and splutter splutter vroom.

But:

1) Major oil leak from idiot light sensor FIXED
2) Medium oil leak from rear main seal PENDING - storage may have dried it out, there was no oil in the sump - may recondition itself with use
3) An alligator clip was holding an essential part of the ECU loom together as I'd forgotten to connect it at first
4) The timing seemed to be 20 degrees too advanced - will dial this in properly tomorrow evening, caused a high 1300 RPM idle with low airflow from no PWM idle
5) No PWM idle - need to research which pin it's defaulted to and upgrade my firmware version and connect the wire up
6) VE set flat to 60 degrees meant for a slightly tough start, but smooth running thereafter, needs richening up a bit, gut feel
7) Lifters are clattering like a bitch - but they did when we picked up the car 3 years ago, too, so I think they'll come right
8) Various other noises and smoke and so forth - need to fix most of the above and give it another run with daylight
9) No wideband! Guess work FTW this time, just like #1 the first FreeEMS car, the USA road trip Volvo 740 Wagon!

And in spite of all of that, it ran smooth and idled after only a short run and managed 5020 RPM almost cold (sorry engine!).

Not bad! :-D

Amazing work especially as it involved an engine swap!

Thanks, yeah, forum posts show that it took me 24 days from driving it in knocking like crazy with the SOHC donk to running it last night with the DOHC donk. It's certainly eaten the bulk of my spare time in that period, though. 2.5 weeks ahead of schedule, 2 weeks ahead by the time it drives well. Perfect.

What's the saying? The things you do for love? No. The things you do for a WOF. Yes. No. Nearly. The things you do for a wife. Got it! "You can't crush this one, I love the blue interior!" - "Okay". :-D WOF on Saturday morning.

Got a list of things to do this evening in the tail end of the Users' Rides thread, and a few things to do after all of that before I can take it in for that WOF again (two tiny rust patches to cover/hide/stop/slow).

Great job, Fred. I'm looking forward to video proof! ;-)

24 hours is pretty damn impressive. It's as if you ran a single-person contest: "From Fail to FreeEMS."

24 days, not hours :-D 24 hours would be hyper impressive! Though if it was all clean up front, it'd likely have been not far off 3 weekend days work.

Great cars - would be very hard to part company with any of them. They're all a bit different in style, character, and other traits and I love them all.

A bit more media while TG holds his breath for lame videos:

Sorted the sway bar clearance, jacked it up to test for full droop and still had about 4mm or so clearance before the flexible cover.

Tweaked the firmware in various ways, dialed in the timing, raised WOT VE a bit here and there, and took it for a drive! Drives sweet :-D

More news as it comes to hand, but I'll be commuting in this tomorrow for sure! :-D

There she is on her second voyage, the first being a basic shake down tour to the top of the nearest hill and back:

Image

Tune consists of:

80% VE at 90+ kPa
75% VE at 80 kPa
70% VE at 70 kPa and below

And it drives like stock except rampant induction noise (whistling at part throttle, exhaust-like roar at WOT), some break up at high RPM, and a slightly high idle from utter lack of control.

Ignition is the bottom half of the old SLATER tune.

It never ceases to amaze me how well engines run with basically no tuning at all :-D

First real use, second and third drives, after first shake down drive (though I have half of that, too):
