Nearly two months later, it's been great having this thing around and usable. I've been driving it here and there weekly or more often. About as often as any of the fleet due to the sheer number of them. Let's call it daily driver, then. Tonight I took it out for a spin and upheld the old adage "A burnout a day keeps the doctor away". FreeEMS powered smoke displays FTW :-)

Burning through a bit of that petrol recently, good fun!

But also burning through a fair bit of oil, too. Not such good fun.

And also burning through even more water, not coolant, it vanishes too quickly. Not fun at all. 3 litres per trip approx, pissing out through the water pump, especially under pressure.

And still running on 3 below 2k or so with light load, but all four (more or less!) from 2k up with WOT.

Aside from using oil, and using lots of water, today the weather was pleasant and mild and I was reminded of the lack of cooling fan function by slightly elevated temperatures while not at speed. This car won't get much use over summer, that's for sure.

New WOF this morning, and new motivation to fix the water pump and put the fan under FreeEMS relay control.

Pleasant morning this morning, but by 9am not hot at all, just mild/cool. And still by the time I got home, struggling to stay cool. Was full of water when I left home.

There's a couple of rust spots that've come up, too. Should deal to those before they get worse, I guess.

So:

1) Water pump
2) Fan relay setup
3) 15" wheels/tyres back on
4) Enjoy it over summer
5) Minor body work in 3 or 4 places
6) New WOF in 6 months

Well, clearly that motivation wasn't too strong, as I only got started on the water pump today. And what a HORRIBLE job it is. Fuck you, Mitsubishi. What a steaming pile of shit engine design. /rant

And about the chores from above:

1 in progress! 6 within a week or so. 2 may happen soon, too. 3 may happen after the WOF. 4 didn't happen. Enjoying it over winter possible, now. May try to sort out 5 before WOF, too. We'll see.

Took it for a few drives today to flush out the rusty dusty coolant multiple times with tstat open. Enjoyed driving it as always. Runs nice at WOT. Shame about the 3 cylinder idle.

Late start to the day, got outside around 1pm, spent maybe an hour helping a friend disassemble a drowned marine Perkins starter motor and got maybe 4 hours in on the old POS.

Tomorrow's agenda, spilling into Tuesday evening with bad luck:

1) Sort out inlet hose situation, currently no hope of sealing, but I think I can do better.
2) Sort out lower main front cover by gluing spacers back into shattered age-heat-damaged plastic holes
3) Reattach power steering pump and alternator
4) Research proper cam belt alignment technique, and do just that
5) Reassemble all of the things, using just water, for now - radiator needs upgrade/replacement, currently pin-hole leak and fan that doesn't turn on.

Later in the week:

Other items as specced above, eg cleaning, rust killing, rust hiding, zinc paint, etc.

Sigh.

Hose situation semi sorted, pulled short bit of hose off, pulled the steel joiner out thought maybe it could work without that, cleaned the inside of the hose up fully, tried that, realised the alternator has no adjustment without the extension, cleaned up the steel joiner a bit, decided acid soak was the ONLY way, put it in some phosphoric acid 1:4 solution, tested one of my spare pieces of hose for size, looks close. IE, still not done, acid *may* cause holes to appear in the joiner, which will involve finding new pipe or MIG welding the old one to seal it up. Yuck.

Sorted out the lower main front cover by JBWelding the brass spacers back into the bits of rotten plastic held together by cable ties through holes drilled in remaining good plastic. Setting as we speak.

Cannot reattach PS and alternator until hose is in place! Fully blocks access to the hose clamp. More great DSM design. #Fail

Researching cam belt reassembly now - internet out for about 36 hours or so. Fixed by a nice bloke in a van this arvo.

Should be able to make the timing marks line up and get tensioned OK. Hopefully I can have it back running tomorrow arvo/evening. Wish me luck with the acid treatment and other miscellaneous items.

Got the belt on and tried to start it, no go. Checked the loom in the foot well, no issues. Gave the dizzy plug a good wiggle, bang, started right up :-D

So not only is it running again with a brand new pump, I've also diagnosed that cutting out issue I noticed some months/years ago. Win win.

Just need to finish putting it back together. Drove it out to the street earlier without alternator or water pump spinning, and just a fresh load of water for coolant.

Success post pending in a day or two :-)
