Puma board for FreeEMS
Re: FreeEMS for Argentina
A quick note, the back side has lots of room for silk screening like the connector pin outs rev number ect. Top side is a bit limited in where the screen can be placed.

Cool, so we have here a referent in engine theory! Nice to meet you Joseph.
I'm sicking to ion sensing then (but after the boards are working).
However, this can be delayed if I couldn't pay or if I'm out of town ;-)

Okay, another one. If nothing weird comes up, I'm ordering the 27th, late at night (GMT-3). If you can ask before would be great. Also, I haven't checked with a few people I know here, but I did check with one last night, so along with 2 for Fred, add 1 for Craig (ha un camioneta tambien!). I can think of a few more that may be keen, I'll let you know soon how many, if you can wait a little.

Oh yes, I'm aware of that, thanks.jharvey wrote:A quick note, the back side has lots of room for silk screening like the connector pin outs rev number ect. Top side is a bit limited in where the screen can be placed.
The 40pin header could benefit from that, gimme a couple of hours (and some time to have breakfast!)

Re: FreeEMS for Argentina
Today I did some footprints re-check (after many many months I discovered my printing problems were due the fact that my printer has been in "pause" since I installed it). I can finally do 1:1 prints from this laptop, previous 1:1 prints came from a copyshop.
Also, turns out if you use postscript A4 instead of postscript, the scale gets messed up, even if you are printing on A4 paper.
I added big vias to reach PA0 and PA1, to test the port. I hope the hole is big enough to avoid being masked. To do this I had to turn off the DRC (naughty!). A pretty good solution would be unmasking some normal vias to have access to those pins. Unfortunately, I can't see an option to unmask certain vias. Its an "all or nothing" thing, selectable at the Plot dialog. Unmasking all vias is a BAD idea, soldering-wise.
I'm putting the graphics now...

As an FYI, Questcomp has a kitting service
http://www.questcomp.com/Services.aspx?page=Services
I'm not sure if it's all that handy or not, but it might be. I don't know how much it costs or anything like that, but it might be handy to see how much of this they could provide.

I've been studying the two pngs linked of 3d and layout and the digikey bom. I'm feeling fairly critical of the BOM right now... feedback time! :-)
Firstly, please please, list the actual manufacture part numbers, esp for key items, well, anything that has one should be listed, just not passives, i guess.
Secondly, no component numbers in the bom, I did some work on this, but couldn't figure it out completely and didn't want to open kicad up, etc.

I added component numbers to the key items, removed non key stuff, listed part numbers i could see an didnt know the type of, listed things i thought should be there and dont know the location of. Help!!
Lastly, it seems to have parts for the BDM in it, a bit misleading without saying so somewhere.
Beyond lastly, lm1815 is in there, AND max9924, which is being used? NOT lm1815, right?
I was surprised to see thermocouple drivers and stepper drivers, but I guess I shouldnt be.
That's all for now.
Fred.

Re: FreeEMS for Argentina
I believe these are both known issues, and I believe nitrousnrg is planning to resolve that later on. For now, he created those BOM's for his purposes when he ordered the parts way back. At that point he didn't know the exact BOM and ordered a bit heavy on some components. By ordering the components early, he was able to verify several parts of the PCB layout. I understand his longer term goal is to use those BOM's and update the properties on the schematic, such that it will generate a correct .lst file. The .lst file is a BOM that includes reference designators and such. If he follows the format I used in 1.0, he'll first list the MFG and MFG#, then at least one vendor source, with an optional second vendor.Fred wrote:I've been studying the two pngs linked of 3d and layout and the digikey bom. I believe he's holding off on populating this BOM data in the schematic because the first PCB spin will likely change a handful of components. Why do it twice when you can do it once. Once he has empirical knowledge that the selected components are correct, he'll populate that data once. Perhaps he'll get to that part while waiting for the boards, or perhaps while he waits for the boards he'll jump on the softer side of this.
Correct it does use the 9924. He got the LM1815 for his own purposes, but has decided to use the better 9924.Fred wrote:Beyond lastly, lm1815 is in there, AND max9924, which is being used? NOT lm1815, right?
Yeah, he put in the SMT analog version of the thermocouple. I understand the goal is to pass data via USB to the tunning software, such that you can get all that data in one point. Perhaps later down the line it can be used to trigger a red light or something, but for now I understand the goal is for tunning diagnostics.Fred wrote:I was surprised to see thermocouple drivers and stepper drivers, but I guess I shouldnt be.

Yep, that's the usual purpose for them, that and gauges. They're not necessary as such, though.
As for the BOM, sure, except suddenly 20 people will want to build this fcuker, so they'll need some guidance, plus, I was just curious about what was and wan't on the board :-)

Re: FreeEMS for Argentina
jharvey answered all your questions, I think. He's saving me a lot of time lately.
The BOM is going to be corrected, but not today. After the 27th yes, for sure.
There might be many optional stuff that I'd like to point out, that way those who aren't interested in driving a stepper motor can left U31 unpopulated.
I did a stupid mistake by not pushing my last changes... I'm working out Jared's changes :-)

Both Marcos and Jared, please configure your repos with irc.freenode.net and the port and #freeems-dev and "activate". I'd like to see the commits swinging past in irc.
No worries on the BOM until they arrive. BIG plus one on the optional sections.
Bugger about the lack of pushing, merge on kicad files cant be fun.
