simplest device with CAN bus?

Post by russian »

As usual I am asking the question as a junk yard fan. What would be the simplest/smallest/cheapest device either reporting data via CAN bus or being controlled by CAN bus?

I am looking for something to play with CAN bus on the bench, before I move the actual vehicle. I know 2003 Mini Cooper tachometer and speedometer are CAN-driven, but 2003 is too new for junk yards. I guess some other stuff in 1999-2000ish BMWs would also be using CAN. Need ideas :)

e46 BMW instrument cluster turned out to be answer for me. For $57 shipped, this thing sends out some status messages - so I can begin by reading - and the gauges are controlled via CAN, so I would have a chance to send messages, too.
