A place to discuss software and code that isn't automotive related. Free and open source preferred but not compulsory.

How to fix Ubuntu

Post by Fred »

This will be an ongoing thread...

To turn off usb auto mounting :

/etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi

You can do it with a tool to avoid mistakes :

gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount false

And a GUI way to do it in gnome :

Why would you want to turn off automount USB?

What's the medibuntu do?

9/10 it really does just work TM, BUT, if you want to customise and configure shit, its a poor choice. Stuff is hard coded and broken for (normal and legitimate) uses other than those envisaged by the authors in London.

To recover data from a near dead disk. you want to type mount run a scrip and unmount. You don't want it mouting, reading the disk, showing a window with stuff in it, basically using up valuable and limited life in your near dead disk. first task after my fresh install - recover data from old disk... and i fcuking couldn't... without great difficulty.

Ah, ok, but for say..... walking up to a computer and using it.... then leaving automount on is a plus! It's good to know how to turn it off, but it doesn't make it worse for normal use to leave it alone.

thing is, version 7 "off" was a menu option in an advanced tab or similar...

version 804.... grrrrr, is an obscure command line option!!! with 2 ways to do it and a third to do it wrong.

now you see?

not possible to do it through the interface and a royal pain to do it via cmd line.

I will certainly admit that ubuntu isn't a friendly front end so much as a gaurd yelling "KEEP DOWN OR VE VILL SHOOT" over linux that's just as hard to use as anyhing else

Thread moved.

I should probably point out that I gave up on this idea and went back to Debian again. Reasons were :

Inability to customise it to the extent that I wanted without great pain.

Great pain caused by :
  • Broken dependencies pulling in things that the app didn't need and that I don't want.
  • Broken packages with code modifications that make them fail to work when things aren't there that it wants but doesn't actually need.
  • "helpful" automatic functionality that is near impossible to disable without obscure hacks.
  • Kernel and service level hacks that make administration difficult or impossible.
  • SLOW kernel with every option turned on...
  • etc...
If you want an easy to use mind numb distro because you are a noob, go for it, it's perfect. If you want something YOU are in control of, steer well clear.

Additionally I've started referring to it as poobuntu and screwbuntu to reflect my feelings about it :-)
