the problem with that ELM chip is that it works on iso-9141, vpw or similar single wire physical protocols. I *think* as of '08 all cars manufactured after then are mandated (at least in the US) to have a common CAN physical implementation to bring all the OBD physical xfer stuff inline. As for those cars, you could just use my PCAN wrapper for that and still use pyOBD on top. ;)
