I'd pick the first one from those four too (staggered). I'm not hung up on the case business, it was just an initial preference.

Mean while its nearly 1 again and I'm knackered.

Before Fred has a heart attack...
I know he wants FreeEMS to have a capital F-E-M-S and lowercase r-e-e along with the height difference. Maybe something like this, with a lowercase "r"?

The case thoughts don't even apply if the word isn't one word inline. I like it :-) I think it would look wrong with the ree a different height in that logo.

Bed calls.

Still +1 for your all-lower-case-two-lines first try logo, still looks the best :)

You think, or you know? You should know, because I've posted it. =P

There's a couple of reasons not to use a lower case are- all aesthetic. First it leaves an open space that none of the other letters have and second it lacks the horizontal line found in the cap R and also the other letters in the word "FREE". Those two components are what creates the high level of visual integrity found in the logo for both words "FREE" and "EMS".

Here's my effort.
Not quite sure about the copyright on the TA card photo, maybe the TA guys wouldn't mind a little free advertising :)

After noticing that some externally-hosted images in this thread disappeared, I contacted m2cupcar in hopes of recovering them. He sent me the following image of his logo iterations leading up to the final FreeEMS logo design:
