What if grid and font colour would depend on cell colour? Black is hardly visible with dark blue and red while white disappears with yellow.

Few more tests with white grid.

Why is the number even relevant if you have the color? What if you turning on the numbers was a toggle, defaulting to off?

Interesting idea, but how do you type in an invisible number? I'll make it optional if you want, just another check box/binding :-) Default has to be on, though. Numbers in FreeEMS, if setup correctly, are real numbers (or close to them), not arbitrary like some inferior system(s).

How often do you need to be viewing numbers across the entire table though?...thinking zooming in and out on regions of the array and not always having numbers shown

The point of the numbers is really for adjustment, and seeing the difference between a cell and it's surrounding cells right?

The background makes spotting outlier cells easy, but fine adjustment probably still needs numbers to be shown.

So why not show a number when a cell has focus (or mouseover) and the surround numbers (two cols/rows in each direction)? And maybe a hotkey (like shift) which shows all the numbers at once while depressed?

Even better might be make the cell background color indicative of how different it's value is from the surround values. E.g. red means a large difference between a cells values and the average of it's 8 surrounding cells?

Zooming in on a partial table is a nice idea! It won't get implemented for a while, though. I'll be doing the same thing for scatter first.

Colouring by difference is a nice idea too. I guess average would be enough because the bad cell would show itself and the ones around it would just show a little. Should be easy to do an experiment with that.

while talking zooming and colours, how about if the limits on the colour spectrum are defined by the maximum and minimum values on the displayed region of the table, so more subtle changes are clearer as you zoom in
