Highway One

With the car fully loaded and ready to go, I left and thus began my great American road trip! Just a man and his car with the sun shining, the fresh sea air running through his hair, the window down and the music up! Life was good!

In N Out

The first leg of the journey was only a few hours long, however I felt the need to stop and sample the local cuisine and culture and visited In and Out near long beach.

City Of Angels

At the end of the day I wound up at a friend's rather lovely house in LA near Venice Beach. I didn't know it then, but this man would turn out to have a HUGE influence in my life and in the development of FreeEMS. We all owe him a lot for what he's done to help both me and the project.

More Than Just Smog

The next day I went for a cruise around the famous parts of LA sight seeing. At that time there were some significant fires in the hills around LA and the place felt even more surreal than usual with a soft mist in the air and a slight burnt smell. It was impossible to ignore the feeling of vulnerability that this forced upon you. Respect mother nature, she's very powerful.

Beverly Hillbillies

I found my way up in amongst the numerous mansions of Beverly Hills and then into Hollywood itself. I managed to find the best part - In'n'out burger! The view isn't bad either! I didn't bother with any of the over-hyped bullshit, though, not my style, at all.

Mulholland Drive

Including the somewhat famous Mulholland Drive, which is an EPIC road :-) Especially for North America

It was so good that after driving from one end to the other and back again, I turned around and did it all again, on video. I think the colour of the rotors speaks for itself ;-)

Downtown

It was the previous evening, while sipping a lovely wine over a lovely Italian meal, that various homeless bums had staggered past our on-street table and made me seek out something polar-opposite to the side of LA that I'd seen earlier that day. I went through downtown LA on my way to that destination and shot a few pictures of the fairly un-exciting sky scrapers. This is only a few minutes drive from the next set of photos, think about the contrast.

Down On Their Luck

It's difficult to get much further away from Beverly Hills, conceptually, than Skid Row, world famous from so many lyrics. I held up my camera and filmed the drive through, which raised a few eye brows. It was fairly empty, bar a cop busting someone for something. It turns out that that's because each morning they bring in buses to ship them all out to somewhere else. Only at night is the full population of Skid Row present, and apparently too dangerous to even think about driving through. Again, skid row is maybe 5 minutes walk on foot from down town central LA where all the big businesses have their big-dollar high rise buildings and associated suited men.

Drawn To Water

Next stop was Marina Del Rey, I'll let the photographs do the talking.
