Feature request - Trigger auto discovery.

I don't know if this is in the right sub-forum. Move at will.

I don't know if this is possible with the hardware currently spec'd. I don't know if this is likely with the current firmware. I don't know if this is even possible?

I hear the Link brand of stand-alone engine management systems have the ability to auto-discover the trigger pattern while the engine is cranking. I would imagine you have to input whether it is a cam or crank mounted sensor, and maybe make some guesses about the trigger layout? All I know is that it sounds really nice to have. Maybe it's a band-aid though? I don't know. A member of another forum said they've set up many Nissans with the Link EMS and one of them didn't work out properly so he put it into self-learn mode for the trigger or whatever and from then on it was golden.

Thoughts?

It's certainly possible, however, that aside, there are many things you can do automatically, and many of those you *shouldn't* do automatically. This is one of them.

Pattern type is something the tuner/modder/owner should KNOW explicitly along with other critical operating parameters. Such things should be setup carefully, once, and forgotten.

Even if it was desirable and we did that, you'd still need to setup the offset angle, for the vast majority of sensor types.

Not a fan, others thoughts may vary.

The feasibility of this also depends if it is discovery of known patterns or establishing the pattern from the trigger input. In the last case, I don't see how you could do anything other than using even teeth with some missing teeth. And in the first case, if your pattern is not in the ECU the feature is useless for you.

So I'm not a fan either for the reasons Fred mentions and the effort needed to implement something like this which could also introduce erroneous data.

Yah, the more I think about it, the more I think the reward (rarely used, and possibly only a band-aid for failing trigger components) isn't nearly worth the effort.

Forget I mentioned it. =]

It wouldn't do that. The best you could hope for is to compare recorded timing data with known patterns for which code exists (or doesn't and give an "sorry, no can do" message) and match one of them. You couldn't just record the pattern and use it. All patterns require different approaches, some from logic, others timing, others both, etc.

Well this person put in the correct trigger info for the Nissan engine, and it wouldn't start. He put it in "learn" mode or "auto discover" mode or whatever and magically it would start. I'm likely missing many of the details. Seems odd that it would work after likely auto discovering the same exact trigger data he input manually. Again, I'm sure I'm missing some details. Maybe he thought he put in the right configuration but didn't...

Probably yes :-)
