I started on it! Got them off the SD card. Started deleting unrelated stuff. Need to keep going and then select some of the 200 to show. Can't upload all of them :-/

Some neat videos, too. Might need a new yt channel for that. Unsure what to do with those.

More progress. You might see something out of this today!

LOL! Nice. OK ok... when I stop playing around with tuning apps I'll do it. I had them all open and was choosing when my machine went down yesterday. Now I don't have my preferred terminal :-(

My contribution, NZ-only, this one is extra-rare being a giant weta as found only on Little Barrier island. Photographed by my ex Linds while she was out there counting rare stuff like tuataras and strange birds and other lizards etc.

Wouldn't ya know it: Not only is my terminal not working, eog my image viewer isn't either. For LOLs:

Code: Select all

fred@cheetah:~/toaster.and.logic.sniffer/toaster.5/good.pics/smaller.1280$ eog *eog: malloc.c:3096: sYSMALLOc: Assertion `(old_top == (((mbinptr) (((char *) &((av)->bins[((1) - 1) * 2])) - __builtin_offsetof (struct malloc_chunk, fd)))) && old_size == 0) || ((unsigned long) (old_size) >= (unsigned long)((((__builtin_offsetof (struct malloc_chunk, fd_nextsize))+((2 * (sizeof(size_t))) - 1)) & ~((2 * (sizeof(size_t))) - 1))) && ((old_top)->size & 0x1) && ((unsigned long)old_end & pagemask) == 0)' failed.
Aborted
So I pulled up a copy of xv that I built years ago on another box, installed a few libs and it runs fine. Old school FTW!

Enough said.

WARNING: This post, those prior, and those to follow, likely contain extremely bad humour. You've been warned.

OK, this post is going to contain the physical mods to the oven, steel, alloy, insulation,
general humour, and other mischief. Click the images for a bigger version (1280x1024).

As some of my more loyal followers may remember, I went shopping for sheet steel, sheet
alloy and insulation one night. I failed. Instead, I bought a cheap cordless drill. Woops.

As I walked home with my head, quite literally, hanging low, disappointed, disheveled,
beaten, broken, and deeply unhappy, I stumbled upon and old VCR on the street.

Image

It smelled like a damp room. Or maybe a damp towel. Certainly not good. It lived outside,
between the windows and the sunshade blind thingies for a few days. Once I cracked it
open, I found a wonderful surprise inside, lucky me!

Image

I knew as soon as I saw the surprise that this VCR was indeed a winner (II) an destined
to go on to bigger and better things.

Image

It was about that time that I also came to know that I may not be such a winner and
may need a little help, so I got myself prepared with some tools of the trade, so to speak.

Image

And some actual tools, too. And supplies, of course...

Image

I cut some of the glass fibre insulation to fit the shape of the recess in the back panel
intending to fit it vaguely inside that and skin internally using the winner (II) VCR steel.

Image

Image

So I marked my steel and began to cut it using the hacksaw.

Image

However progress was so slow that I felt the need to take multiple photographs of it.

Image

It, and my creative engineering due to a lack of appropriate tools....

Image

In the end, though, persistence triumphed, a lot like this project, really.

Image

Image

Though not at all like the acer monitor cardboard box that I'd used as a work support...

Image

The final piece looked the part, and fitted where it needed to, too, so I figured that
I hadn't done a bad job... just a piss poor one.

Image

Image

After all of that cutting had given me a sore arm I decided to do something more leisurely
for a while and fitted the ceramic tape claimed to work to 1350C. More on that later...

Image

Image

All so pretty and white, what could possibly go wrong? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxD44HO8dNQ

Nothing, right? So I went ahead and installed the glass and the double skin for the back.

Everything seemed to be going swimmingly, so I thought I'd test it, right here, on my desk, middle
of the room, middle of winter, windows closed, computer a foot away, eee even closer, no problem... :-/

Image

Image

Image

Image

Well, not much of a problem... really... ? :-/

/me opens all 3 windows as wide as they'll go and hopes it clears before his mrs comes home at 8pm or so...

1350C they said... turns out that the bonding agent and other stuff in there burns off around 250/300

Right where I was peaking... woops. There was an additional issue, too, I forgot/ignored the paint on the VCR
steel. The smoke was mostly from the insulation, but the VCR paint stuff f***ing STUNK to high hell! Not nice.

Not one to be deterred, I did some research, realised that it needed some heat
to clear it up, and gave it another shot, but in the still-dirty-from-last-night's-fryup
kitchen, with the fan on, instead!

Image

Image

The results proved my theory and solidified my research!

Image

Image

Image

...and gave me a new idea...

Note the white bits are where it was most hot...

Excuse the greasy mess, it's usually kept fairly clean, I swear...

Image

Image

Which gave me another idea... how do you strip paint? Heat, right? :-/

Image

Image

Image

Image

Worked a treat! :-)

I double insulated the top, as with just the ceramic, it was still getting pretty toasty (ha ha ha).
