OLV Translations

Post by Fred »

Currently I'm in the process of fully internationalising the app and translating it to Spanish. Once I'm done, and after the 0.0.3 release, it'd be nice to have it translated to more languages.

I have a list by numbers, which doesn't tell the whole story here:

From this, in addition to English and Spanish, I'd like to see the following eventually be included, roughly in this order:
  1. Mandarin Chinese
  2. Russian
  3. Portuguese
  4. French
  5. German
  6. Japanese
  7. Polish
  8. Italian

I'll do German, no problem. Can you post a link to the language file to be translated?
Shouldn't take too long :)

I'd love to hear feedback on how much time/trouble it is for anyone to translate from English. My girlfriend's Russian and I work at a university where the following languages are spoken in my department: French (France, Morocco), Spanish (Central/South American), Chinese (all over), Korean (South), Hindi (Southern India), Arabic (Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Syria), Nepali, Polish, Ukranian, and I know people who speak Portuguese, Tamil, and Turkish. Despite all that, almost all of them are loaded down with academic work or family, so getting even one translation pro-bono or even paid--out of my pocket--could be difficult. None are car people from what I can tell, so it might be hard for them to intuit the proper translation.

EHB, not yet, it's VERY incomplete right now, but I'll hit you up for that soon, once I finish the English and Spanish variants, or at least English.

Toxic, yes, I had the same trouble with Isa and Spanish, though if you're doing it as a pair then it's possible, if a little search-laden.

I write today after receiving a Chinese translation overnight. Which is a shame, because it's near worthless as it is. :-(

Just to be crystal clear, what the above bold bits mean is that, right now, there isn't anything to translate. It's all still hard coded in the source. I will partly finish this today, but not to a state worth translating, only partly. It's quite likely that translations other than Spanish will have to wait until after 0.0.3, however it depends how long there is between my finishing my work and when I decide to release. There may be time to add a few, and associated tests. I will let you all know.

The language stuff is covered by a set of unit tests now, too. So we'll know if the translations are broken/incomplete. Moving forward, what that'll mean is that a developer will make changes, add English variants, and the build will fail on missing language stuff. This isn't a big deal as it defaults to English. It just means it can't go to the next release without being updated. This is a good thing TM.
