Had a professional take a look at the car tonight, and he quickly diagnosed it as having a winding out, probably by blown diode. He showed me a screw driver on starter trick to listen to the bearings, and they were clearly not the source of the noise. We checked the Voltage and it was only 13.8 and didn't come up with a solid rev. Not sure what my plan is to sort that out, will probably ignore it until it's safely in the garage and not needed to be working regularly.

In other news, my J160 driveshaft showed up today and seems fine! :-D Now I just need to go and pick up the gearbox itself. Then the only bits missing for a total starlet build will be brakes, suspension and diff. And a bit of a tidy up body wise, in a few areas.

That's good progress on 3 projects today! :-D

Technically this car is not a sprinter, but: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 5766522880

When I got home from the cruise in the 240 wagon, I took the mrs to the beach in the Starlet, no pics of the Starlet, but here's a few of the beach:

Then we went cruising around the central city suburbs and streets, checked out westhaven marina, myer's park, ponsonby road, etc. Sunset colours everywhere, cruising in the Starlet! Very relaxed now :-)

There is an earlier model green Starlet for sale right now with the same engine this car will have, they want 9500nzd for it. These three pics got me a bit excited:

Discovered it leaking water today. Wet patch under the car. Popped the bonnet and topped it up with about a litre. Wasn't overheating, but was warming up noticeably faster, and running a bit warmer than usual. Had a look underneath while I had it open and it seemed to be coming from the block drain on the front. Will have to have a closer look another day.

Had a closer look underneath it just now: Water pump. Not sure if I can be bothered fixing that, or not. Probably should, but should probably be accompanied with a radiator upgrade, and proper coolant, and some other stuff. Will have to work hard to get it into the garage, and the hotel out and fixed and WOFed. Running out of days until I can't use this car anymore, 21st is the last day of WOF until the next one. Sigh.

So tiny/narrow, plus nice and close to the curb/kerb: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 8856071168

Today no water leaked out at all! Interesting. Intermittent strong leak or no leak. Weird.

Ordered a water pump for it anyway.

Overnight it leaked again, so I'd say the above was a one-off. Every time it only takes about 1l or less which I presume is the volume in the head and top of block above the water pump seal... Topping up twice daily so it doesn't get lower than that and overheat! Pain in the bottom.

Tonight she's sitting in the pride of place in front of the bedroom in the driveway! The caravan has been stuffed into the far corner behind a bush. The hotel is out of the garage and on the lawn. Tomorrow she'll vanish into the abyss that is my garage, and become inoperable in a number of ways.
  • Firstly, dysfunctional alternator out.
  • Secondly, rooted water pump out.
  • Thirdly, angle grinder to the bad bog job in the roof.
  • Fourthly, radiator out to be replaced by something capable of cooling a 200hp 4AGE that I'll never own (it's called head room).
The existing radiator is on borrowed time. The plastic tanks are crazed with cracks everywhere and just waiting to burst open spilling rusty water onto the tarmac.

When she next emerges from the garage, she should have a working alternator, a new water pump, and radiator, a fully steel roof, a working rear wiper, and wasted spark FreeEMS ignition full time.

A couple of teasers for later in the year, or next year:

And tonight (last night, forgot to hit submit), for the first time since she became mine, she's inside! And that's where she'll live from now on, mostly because she's the smallest car so it leaves the most space for doing other stuff, but also because I don't want it to rust into an Auckland car and generate a lot of work. I might do some light work to it this week as described above. But there are other things to chew through first.
