Re: Stagea Project TODO List

Post by Fred »

OK, did a bit more on the old girl tonight.
  • Obtained some 1UZ-FE head bolts in m10x1.5 from em_knaps, to suit the bell housing bolt holes in the block.
  • Figured out a spacer setup to allow the overly long bolts to work, and good thing they were, too, or it would not have cleared the flex plate.
  • Attached the bracket to the block
  • Slid the bracket into the base
  • Lowered the weight onto the base
  • Folded up my crane and put it away
  • Put the drain tray back under it and pulled the bung back out to drain more oil remnants
  • Undid the rocker cover and sprayed some SCA $2 degreaser through all of the valve gear etc, much of the carbon stains just washed away leaving clean metal, though it was fairly dirty/black, just not well stuck on.
  • Undid the dizzy cap, rotor, and CAS cover, and inspected the disk to see the style
  • Cleaned around the oil feed block off bolt
  • Pulled the oil feed block off bolt out and cleared blank gunk from behind it (stagnant, no flow = build up)
  • Sprayed BNT brake clean down the hole until it ran more or less clear
  • Measured depth of hole at 163mm with a vernier's back end, deeper than the 139.7 quoted in Rob's link as being "good" and plenty wet with oil
  • Srayed CRC light penetrating oil down the now dry hole
  • Reinstalled the block off bolt to keep the hole clean from dust
Took a couple of photos of the thing.

Good news on the oil feed.
Liking the bastardised attachment components.

I have to say, I'm quite surprised that the bolts holding the box on are only 6 m10x1.5 units. The Mazda 4 cylinder in my truck has MUCH bigger bolts holding it to its gearbox. Even the little 4age uses large m12 bolts. Kinda surprised that 1UZ-FE uses such small bolts on their heads, too.

So... I just updated the title of this thread, and the "have" list in the first post, and linked a tweet and a ref to this page at the end of the first post... So I guess I should put these pics here for reference, then:

One of the more exciting vehicles you've picked up as of late. Looks to be in amazing shape, which makes the price all the more surprising.

Great catch. Will this become another vehicle retrieval adventure in social media?

Just FYI, it seems that the info in that link is for 2wd manual conversion (even though they use the GTR gear box). You will need a lot more bits to go to 4WD; GTR sump, front diff, axles, CV's, uprights, brakes, attesa pump and electronics. Your rear diff ratio will need changing to match the front diff. I seem to recall that there is some work needed to get the RB30 block mated to the GTR sump also. There may be other stuff too like subframe, steering rack etc but I have never looked at it closely.

Aware of the 30/sump mismatch.

Why can I not use both of my existing diffs? Are the flanges that different? Nothing new driveshafts can't fix?

Good spotting, anyway. I'd not realised that it was a RWD guide.

Actually, I didn't read in detail and was assuming yours was only a 2WD. So most of what I wrote is already done for you and you are right, the existing diffs should be ok.
