Fred's 1994 Type R Mazda Lantis

Post by Fred »

Yep, I bought another car!

And although it is a type R, it doesn't have VTEC :-p It is, however JDM, yo! :-D

Pics: http://stuff.fredcooke.com/1994-TypeR-MazdaAstina/

TODO list:
  • Change ownership over
  • Flush oil and change filter, add Nulon lifter cleaner
  • Change rear brake pads as they wore clean through
  • Clean all glass and rainx most of it too
  • Change wiper blades ASAP
  • Change front brake rotors as they have run-out: On target to pick up replacement bits tomorrow 19th Nov.
  • Find and fix clunks from chassis/suspension/loose bracket/whatever it is: Booked for a full lift on Sunday morning.
  • Find out why shifter has mucho side play and fix it = Mazda was optimistic with their engineering. Bushes need replacing.
  • Maybe coolant and brake fluid too, perhaps power steering fluid
  • Vacuum interior
  • Lubricate gas flap hinges Amsoil waterproof synth grease FTW. Heated with blowtorch for maximum penetration.
  • Find a newer steering wheel, this one is peeling leather
Very happy with it so far! I drove it about 160 km home last night and the only real issues were visibility and brake vibration under light pedal application at higher speeds. I'll be more comfortable raping it once it has fresh oil especially once it's synthetic. Engine feels good, starts instantly, and makes good torque down low and power up top. 170 PS == 167 HP :-) Clutch has plenty of bite. Gearbox shifts smooth. Shocks are OK. Tracks straight. Nice and stable at high speeds. Wonderful.

A wise man once told me that the first thing you do upon acquiring a used vehicle is to change ALL the fluids, and all scheduled maintenance parts - filters, belts, etc. That way, you KNOW when the last time it was done.

@Ivan141 It makes a nice noise as it is :-)

@DonTZ125 First thing I do is get rid of the air filter :-D Will get through stuff bit by bit, but an oil flush and some brake work is priority before Friday evening when I plan to drive it fairly long distance.

If I replaced all of the bits on it that need it, I'd spend more than the entire car cost! :-D Keen on keeping the engine and other mech bits working right, but not going too extreme on it.

Last night, flush, oil, oil filter, lifter cleaner, duct tape up air intake.

Tonight, change rear brake pads and pack to go away.

Not bad for your 48 hours, IMO. Especially because I have no spare time.

Cleaned all of the glass today during my lunch break. Rainxed the windscreen. Much better.

Have put about 600 km on it on just 72 hours! Not bad going.

So nice having a decently powerful car again! Passing is easy. Cruising is easy. Lean on it in fifth and it just creeps up and up. Drop it down to a low gear and it pulls and pulls. Love it.

Put another ~500km on it already. Love the way it drives. Needs a few tidyups though.

Desired performance mods:
  • Lightened flywheel
  • Fresh clutch disk
  • ITBs for noise
  • Lighten body/chassis by ~100 to ~200kg :-p OR swap in the KL-ZE
Turns out that it weighs 1210kg hence the last item on the list. If it weighed in closer to 1000kg it'd be awfully nippy indeed.

In neutral if you stand on the gas, it's pretty sluggish to rev up to the limiter. Hence item one on the list.

Item 2 because it's close to worn out, but still very usable at full torque unless you're getting it hot with a hard launch.

Item 3 because who doesn't love that sound.

Tonight I:
  • Pulled cover off of shifter etc. Found bushings under car too loose. Requested advice on ordering better ones.
  • Put more lifter cleaner in the engine. Double dose for a dirty bitch.
  • Greased gas flap hinge with amsoil synthetic grease heated with blow torch for penetration.
  • Checked tyre pressures, topped up front right from 28 to 36 or so.
  • Tried to locate clunk by pulling on engine and car etc. Failed.
  • Organised rotors and pads to put on the thing. Pickup tomorrow.

You could also use AFT oil, its a strong dispersing oil and its cheap :) Just ad a little in the regular oil. You could also use a flushing engine oil for 30 minutes.
