bäda's MKII VW Golf GTI 16V

Post by bäda »

Hey again,

for those of you who have not seen it yet I introduced myself already over at the Introduction thread viewtopic.php?p=29548#p29548.

Here I want to present you the car which will hopefully be powered by a freeEMS run engine in the future.

It is a Mk2 Golf GTI with no real production date, because it was rebuilt on a factory new chassis by one of the previous owners in 1998.
Hence its not really a genuine GTI but it has no rust at all which normally is a problem here in southern Germany and I don't need to have any concerns about putting a heavily modified engine into it.

I own this car together with my brother, who is a cnc machinist at our family-owned small milling and turning workshop.
This circumstance provides us with a nice collection of tools and also allows us to machine some of our own parts.

The Golf was our first car and when we first bought it had no engine at all.
So we put in the whole drive train of a rotten GTI 16V and learned a lot about this car along the way.

This is how it looks atm:

Cool! I was hoping that you'd post some pics of it :-)

Glad you like it. I'll post some pics of the engine later.

And I did forget to mention, comments are of course very welcome!

edit:
As promised, pics of the engine buid in progress.
We are currently working on the valve cover to fit COPs from the newer VAG FSI engines.

Very nice car, in the Netherlands nice Mk2 Golfs are starting to become very rare. I quite like the 16V Golfs :)

I guess it has the 1800cc 16V KR engine
What ECU / trigger wheel setup do these engines use ?

I am planning to install a FreeEMS system on a VW ABF engine (2.0 16V from Golf Mk3), that engine has a 60-2 trigger wheel with hall sensor and a distributor
I think mechanical the KR is very similar, but I think it uses a simpler engine management than the ABF

It's a PL engine which is almost identical to the KR except for slightly different camshaft timings and an enhanced engine management with lambda control and knock sensing.
But it is far from the modern engine management the ABF uses. If I've had the choice I'd also gone withe an ABF, just the 60-2 trigger on the crankshaft on it's own is good reason, but they're quite expensive compared to the 1.8 and old 2.0 (9A) 16V engines, which you can get really cheap.

Originally these engines use a distributor with a hall sensor, but as you can imagine we're not planning to use this setup. As already mentioned we are currently trying to fit COPs from the FSI engines and for rpm and position sensing we will try a crankshaft seal flange with integrated 60-2 trigger wheel from some newer engine which is almost a perfect fit.

That's a dubious claim. Do the math. The reason OEMs run these is for misfire detection. Not that it's bad to run them, however it will burn more CPU time than a lower count setup, with negligible gains in accuracy of timing. IE, for anything > 8k RPM it's a bad idea and worse than a lower count in most ways.

From this point of view you're right of course, but what I wanted to say is, that it's nice to have a working OEM solution.
