hi guys...

i've been a member since the beginning, but have been a bit slow to post, as i am in my 4th year Mech engineeering at uni, and its a bit consuming, with the added "distractions" of my Gf and my car. [ in random order ]
my car, like the title says, is built in SA, and being an exec model, the added extras were the 8V gti engine, suspension and brakes. also, full leather interior, and the highly sort after Rallye front.

the car now sports, a MS1V3.57 board controlling a 16V 9a engine out of a 1994 passat gt, i also used the brakes, as they were larger... but not too big... not a fan of HUGE brakes, more of "less = more"....

before i did the MS conversion, i had it running with the standard k-jet system, as i knew at some stage i would go EFi, so i did not bother with the ECU and loom from the passat.

it is now sporting ITBs from some GSXR1000. they are 50mm in diameter. the plan is to go with the syncro map setup as seen on msefi.com. however, im enjoying the ITBs at the moment just the way they are. [ the sound is AWESOME ]

i have done some average track time with it, with all my different setups, excluding the ITBs, and i'm very happy with the way its going...

future mods are wasted spark, cams, Port and polish, hoping for 200bhp... which is a tall order, but i gotta aim high

200bhp from a 16v 2.0 with itbs and cams isn't unreasonable or extreme IMO.

Now hurry up and post vids of the ITB's in action :-)

if i had alot of money, and got some awesome headwork done by lynn rogers [ kiwi head guru ], then maybe 200bhp, its unreasonable, but still extreme, thats because the combustion chamber design isn't the best, and far from it. later model NA cars, with similar engine size and valves, can produce it easier.

another thing to note, is that my car does not have variable valve timing.

Got a photo of these "poor" combustion chambers/ports? It's hard to believe that an oem 16v making close to 150hp stock has poor head design <shrug> but it's possible I guess. Looking forward to the vids.

the GTI 16v [ engine code kr ] has larger inlet ports and produces 2 bhp more, 136 bhp. The 9a has smaller inlet ports and a milder cam and produces 134bhp. also note the 9a is a 2ltr, whilst the KR is a 1.8ltr.

the MK3 GTI had the ABF engine, which produced around 150bhp.

and i dont have a photo of these poor combustion chambers or the ports.

got my ITbs going today...

idle is steady at 1100. cold start is a bit rough, but thats cool with me, im not fussed about the cold start.
car goes good, im quite happy with the drivability of it. low rpm,low TPS settings, its quite good, not peaky, or jerky, no flat spots either.

ITBs has lived up to its expectations, the sound is amazing. im really happy with it, however, the MAP vs TPS is the big problem, which i already knew. at 20% or so TPS, the MAP jumps to 85-90 MAP. it idles around 49-51kpa.

overall im happy, it leaves alot of good stuff to follow....

This one is better, from idle, 1st, 2nd, chickens out of 3rd around 6k, 4th briefly.

What is the hesitation in first Nigel? Wheelspin that caught? or what?

the car was in 2nd gear, then i put it into 1st, and it wasnt stationary, so the revs shot up to 2krpm

Not really, no, there is some hesitation in 1st at 6k, maybe its just a video artifact or something. Not sure. Cool vid though :-)

Do try to get that one I asked for, but don't say where it is!

Cams would help, but it looks like it pulls strong to 7k without stress. If you get bigger cams, you will need to rev it more to use them properly, and that will mean your rods are either stressed or needing replacement. What is stock redline on one of these engines?
