Whats the boost control like on this??? I had horrible horrible problems with overboosting and my manifold had a MUCH better angle for the wastegate than yours does. After lots of messing around I had to go off the turbine housing to get boost to stay low and controllable.

There is no electronic boost control, but if you mean how solid is the gate control, perfectly. It rises up and sits at 18psi from 5k to redline. I have it plumbed wrongly there though, but that won't change how the gate holds pressure. With a small inner valve spring holding the gate open instead of closed it made 3psi by 7k and 0psi at 5k. It felt pretty fun and linear like that, but not hugely fast at all :-)

Perhaps lengthening or shortening your hose to the gate would have helped?

Well, it comes with 5 stud diff and front hubs which means cheap n easy 5 stud conversion and disk brakes for fred for the ute. The ute will stop as well as it goes :-) Hooray for that!

I tried everything - longer hose - shorter hose, electronic control, pneumatic control, no control, various springs (3psi one ended up in the wastegate) I think it has more to do with turbo size and collector design compared to engine size. If your turbo doesn't fully spool up to 5k then yeah I assume the turbo is quite large compared to engine displacement, so at the end of the day, reducing the turbine pressure wouldn't be difficult even with the disadvantage of the flow having to make a sharp turn. In my case the 35/40R was making full boost by 1800rpm - so without very very good design it overboosts. At the end of the day I shouldn't have listened to other people.

When I sat down to work out what parts I would need/want, I talked to a lot of so called experts. Most laughed at me wanting to turbo a shitty falcon 6cyl (there was no xr6 turbo when I started this project). Some said the best I would get was around the 300rwhp mark. They all suggested something like a t04e or a GT30. I was talking about GT35R as min and was thinking more like T66 or GT42. After talking to a bunch of places and everyone tellimg me a 35 would be bordering on awful lag - I decided that I wanted the 35. Now I wish I bought the 42.

The 35R is almost identical to that turbo. I wouldn't put it on anything over 3.0 twin cam. You could go bigger than 42r without a worry. I'd choose a 42r for an rb30det or 2jz setup. I am a bit mad though :-)

Planning such an rb30 setup in the future, but using an hx52 holset. They are good to over 800hp.
