Re: My 1983 Mazda Cosmo (rotary injected turbo)

Post by Fred »

They are a dime a dozen at home. If you want, I can put up pictures of it. It wasn't all that special to look at, but I had sorted the suspension and brakes and added LSD etc. It handled and stopped with the best even though it was fairly slow with only 152hp to lug 1250kg around. As you can imagine, I was somewhat upset when it was fraudulently sold without my permission while I have been away from NZ. Thus, those pictures and videos are all I have of it. Let me know if you want and I will post a thread.

Sure post them up. I would have been fit to be tied if my car was sold with me gone not knowing about it.

Im not all that up on the Jap cars as much as i am the bikes but the skyline is the same platform as the 240sx right?

Pretty much all the nissan rear ends are the same except some larger cars had variations and older ones had solid mounted diffs, however the skyline front end is a nicer design that the silvia one. R32 suffered from insufficient strength due to geometry in the upper arms, but R33, R34 had that fixed. The only down side was bushes that wore out too fast. All rwd nissans are fairly similar. See Jakes ae86 thread to see what the subframe looks like.

There is a fair chance I'll see two of them again too :-( but not the third....

The miata belongs to the German 2nd from LHS of the group photo. I'm the one on the left.

It can be found in a few more pictures here :

of when I helped him do the spare relocation thing.

I did say it was nothing pretty...

r32 got

ca18e - 2hp crap
rb20e - 3hp poor
rb20de - 152hp decent (7500rpm, and reliable as the day is long)
rb20det - 215hp decent + boost = good
rb25de - 185hp fun (same rpm, more torque, just as reliable)
rb26dett - 280hp mean! (easily moddable to much more)

in the R33 model, you got

rb20e - poor
rb25de - vvt brought it up to 200hp
rb25det - 280hp mean (wont make power as easily as the rb26dett, but will make plenty
rb26dett - 280hp (easily moddable to much more)

r34 got

rb25de
rb25det
rb26dett

english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/nissan/skyline/ for more info :-)

VERY popular in NZ is the hybrid using the R30/R31/Holden RB30E bottom end, and the RB25DE(t) (DOHC) head. This can be built very cheaply and is capable of 600 - 1000 hp depending on the build. I intend to build one of these on the cheap when I get back and stuff it into a nissan station wagon called a stagea with a GTR gearbox and a few other goodies. I might put an HX52 Holset on it, or something similarly large. It should make a good ski car with 4wd for overtaking on ice with chains ;-)

Ok i see now i wasnt sure on the motor options that came in these.

Oh the car looks fine to me like i said guys over here would kill for just the parts off it much less the whole car engines are easy to change but if you cant get the parts thats another thing.

DSM's are big over here Eclipse,EVO but Mazda stuff is scarce except the occasional RX7 im not saying there not here its just you dont see them infact i have never seen a skyline in person and right hand drive you would be the king over here.

The beauty of the RB motors with the exception of the RB30E is that they are short stroked. What that means of course is that you can hammer them like there is no tomorrow and they will not give up. I once did a full 2minute burnout on the 7500rpm limiter in 2nd gear. That's 120seconds at full throttle and max rpm and all I blew was the power steering pump because I ended up on full lock during that period and it overheated from recirculating the fluid for too long. The RB30 being 86mm gives it a reliable 7000rpm redline with the dohc head on it and some rods, and stretchable to 8k with some work. They are very strong engines.

enough of that, there are things to fix :-)
