65 Mustang coupe to CNP & direct injected LPG (in progress)

Post by oden »

August 2009 I purchase a rather sad looking 65 Mustang and on May 2011 she drove again (legally that is). This is a daily driver so its has not been a high performance resto, focus is more on comfort and economy.

Specs / Modification:
  • 289 small block windsor
  • Original C4 automatic transmission
  • Honey gold exterior with ivory gold deluxe interior
  • Straight LPG conversion (425 Impco)
  • Right hand drive conversion
  • Front disc brakes from Castlemain Rod Shop
  • Rack and Pion steering from America Online Imports
  • Ididit adjustable steering column
  • Sedan air compressor, adapter by speedy air spares
  • Modern under dash AC system from speedy air spares
  • XJS Jaguar seat frame modified and custom foamed to look like a 64 mustang seat
  • 80 Amp alternator (as high as I could get)
  • 18 Amp electric fan for AC system
  • 17 inch rims
Electrical stuff
  • Electric windows from Electric life with one touch operation from DEI, 95 mustang billet window switches
  • Central locking from some cheap arse china brand (works well)
  • 2 way alarm with 1km range and remote start (love this) from DEI
  • Cruise control from Dakota Digital
  • Computer controlled dash with gear indicator from Dakota Digital
  • Dome light supervision (automatic head lights) from Dakota Digital
Here are some pic

For the FreeEMS install I plan to do it in two stages, first CNP then once that is working well move onto vapour injection.

Here is the plan
  • CAS sensor from an Nissan 200sx (SR20DE) modified to fit onto the original dizzy
  • CAS wheel from a 1990 Mitsubishi Galant, which is 4-1 configuration
  • CHT sensor fitted is used by the dash so I am going to use a Arduno with a dual channel digital Potentiometer from microchip to split the signal up between FreeEMS and the dash
  • TPS and IAC to be determined, may get a new throttle body. Current config will be a pain to mount TPS and there is no provision for IAC.
  • MAT sensor will be used at the moment as I have one ready to go. Might move to IAT is the trottle body allows it (current config does not)
  • EGO wide band and controller already purchased
  • EGT, plan to install but more homework is required
  • CNP, purchase an LS1 coil pack and have started to make custom mounts for the rocket cover
Will post more as it unfolds.

Comments welcome

Got the wide band o2 sensor installed. At the moments its running an analogue 5V gauge just so I can see an output.

Have been told that mounting the sensor in the centre of the H cross over causes slow reaction times in the readings, making it harder to tune.

Probably true as that gas isn't flowing, just resonating. You might want to upgrade to one in each closer to the engine where the last bank merge happens at some point.

Mounting on the side like that is also not ideal. You really want to be in the top quarter of the pipe, so 45* or less from the exact top. You'll get away with it as is, though.

You'll need a TPS and WBO2 input and high res datalog to know how slow it is/isn't.

It'll probably be fine. In fact, almost certainly. What happens is dew builds up in the pipe, and then you hit it with fire, and it gets hot, then some of the dew falls from the top onto the sensor and makes it crack. Chances of that happening in the cross pipe, likely pretty slim. As long as you're on the side or up, you're doing OK, just not perfect :-)

Dizzy time!

This is doing it the hard way. Should have just purchased an aftermarket part instead, oh well, committed now :?

Here we have the SR20DE Dizzy striped down and the long shaft cut short, the outer housing of the shaft was also cut. You can see the mount flange that will connect the SR20DE shaft to the stock dizzy

Image

Stock dizzy with its guts removed, you can see the shaft that still needs to be cut down a little

Image

The top of the dizzy needed to be placed in a lathe and cut down as it was not smooth enough to sit flat onto the mounting plate (next image). The extra metal bits have also been removed and a bit of fill added (needs to be painted)
Image

Mounting plate that will mate the SR20DE to the top of the original dizzy. Had this custom made.

Mounting plate sitting on the original dizzy

I cut the top of the SR20DE dizzy cap and glued a new flat lid on it. As this is going to be CNP I though it would be ugly to leave the spark plug terminals with no leads plugged in. Considering how high the finished part will be, it will be highly visible. Once painted (not shown) it looks alot better ;)
Image

All the parts sitting together. Original spark plug cap sitting next to it so you can get an idea how taller this going to be. Remember the stock dizzy has been machined to be a little shorter as well.

Paint is now drying.

Next step, testing... so worried it wont work

As long as the disk is positively keyed to the shaft and that's keyed to the crank/cam, then you're going to be OK :-)

Picked up this throttle body for a Ford AU V8. At this stage only wanted the TPS out of it, but latter might use the complete assembly.

Any idea why there are two TPS? Mechanically they operate identically and they both have the same resistance range.
