AE86 1UZ power 240sx independent suspension swap

This is my crazy project, basically my race car. It started life as a
1996 Toyota corolla coupe (AE86)

i knew the car had some bonded up rust from before i bought it, and a
Major hole broke though, so i started body work on the car that
quickly escalated into Major custom work.

as the car sits now its a bare shell with a Nissan 240sx suspension in
the rear and i also have 240 parts for the front. it also has motor
mounts for a Toyota 1uz v8 and transmission mount for both a R154
(turbo supra 5 speed) and a Lexus 6 speed automatic, more then likely
i will be using the automatic but in a paddle shifted manual only
mode. can you say instant gear change with 0 off throttle time. the
plan at the moment is to turbo the motor with two GT series turbos.
sizing wont be decided untill the last minute do to not even knowing
what all the specs of the motor will be and my power goals are up in
the air. suffice it to say i want insane amounts of power the car
will be setup very time attack/race car setup. i have no plans of
actually driving the car on the street other them maybe to the car
show that takes place up the street from my house every week so i will
keep a tag on it. nothing on the suspension will be left stock.
ofcorse a cage will be in it, and possibly air jacks, I can fit up to
16" wide tires (that's a 406, but i guss ill be limited to a 385) on
the back and and Ive fitted a 300 wide tire on the front to test it
out. I will need some inner fender mods for that tire to work but
its doable. this is all done with add on wheel flares. needless to
say the car will look very wide and stancy.

at the moment my goal is to have all the body and chassis work done
and painted, and the suspension assembled with all the good stuff by
the end of July so i can display the car at a Toyota/Lexus gathering
but it wont be the end of the world if i don't make this goal.

I agree with him ^ good choice of rear end too. They take a fair bit of abuse, esp if you have the 8" and not the 7.5" rear in it. I never broke my 7.5" locker though :-) I did try my best. Just wait till walkercam gets a hold of this thread!

Another nice aspect about those nissan rears is that the subframe is quite soft, so if you thump something hard, the car might come off a little better than it would with a live axle in there. Yes, I found that out first hand too :-) woops.

Ah jealousy's a bitch. That is one bad ass build you've got going on there dude! I am throughly impressed.

I would like to know a little more about your setup if you dont mind sharing as i also have the dream of an IRS rear end in an AE86. What technique did you use to determine where the subframe should fit? Did you reference back to the 240sx (200sx here in NZ) and then pack it on the AE to get it in the right place? Or did you just make it fit and account for the rest with adjustable ride height etc? Did you modify the subframe/susp arms at all to get it in there?

I have an AE86 in the build at the moment also, some pics will find their way on here some time soon. Current setup is/will be 20V 4AGE, W55 box, custom bellhhousing, Hilux/Tacoma? 4.3 LSD, D2 coilovers. Plus my daily driver is a S14 with SR20DET, so i think you can see why I like your project so much

about rear end fitmment.. i owned an s13 at the time, you can see it in one of the pics. i took mesurements from it and how its orentated in the car and tryed to match that as good as i can, i could alwasy correct with spacers, witch will perlly happen as its another way to tune the handleing. I then in the process decided to move the rear end higher into the car, so the rear is not lowered becouse the shocks or springs are sortened cousing the arms to move up, i moved the whole subframe up, this puts all the arms more into there natrial position when the car is lower. my subframe int he corolla sits 2" higher into the car then the 240 one did. there by effetivly lowering the car 2" with out messing with anything. It took 3 trys to get it in straight. its not verified on a alighment rack that its correct.
