Soldering Surface Mount Devices - for the average joe

Post by GartnerProspect »

Found this the other day when I was debating how much trouble a 80pin QFP would be to solder by hand. Gave me a 'no sweat' attitude and hope it does the same for you. Can't wait to get home and try it out!

Good video :-) I saw one of the wiping/floating technique on youtube :

Worth a watch also.

I tried it and with no flux and no fancy stuff AT ALL, I could do 0.8mm pitch, but had trouble with 0.5mm. I had no wick to clean up with though. With wick, I could have fixed the small mistakes. It will be cool to do a hand made SMD board later when Cam or Tony or someone designs a nice one for us. I look forward to it :-)

I'm teetering on going mostly surface mount on my next board and doing it all by hand. I think it's the only way I'll have enough room for everything!

Solder article / video / solder paste source

He has some nice video's recommending how to use it. My personal preference is to use the paste and an iron, but that's mostly because I'm impatient. Ever since I started using the paste, I haven't been able to go back, and go back I mean to through hole, or SMT w/ solder wire. It makes it so easy if you can get good paste.
