ALL Users: Email Problems! [SOLVED]

Hello All,

Recently, with the arrival of many Russian users, I've become accutely aware of the deficiency in my email setup on the server. Another member pointed it out some weeks ago and I did some work to try to fix it, but to no avail.

I want everyone to be aware that until the issue is solved, fussy email providers will catch all mail from my server and mark it as spam. This means:
  • NO account activation email
  • NO private message notifications
  • NO subscribed thread notifications
  • NO site wide emails (not sent any yet, but will send one in a month or two)
  • NO emails from the forum software what-so-ever.
If you HAVE been getting emails, that shouldn't change as this problem has been constant since migrating to the new server a few months ago.

Vague tech:

The problem is that replyto, from and returnpath do not match and some email providers filter on this.

Solutions:
  1. Someone who actually knows what they are doing walks me through it and we fix the setup as it is. (I don't want to allow SSH access to anyone at this time, so I'll be fixing it, but can provide config dumps and run tests etc.)
  2. Move all mail functions to google's services.
If anyone wants to volunteer to help me fix it over jabber/irc/aim/msn/skype/etc please reply here or PM or email or chat or phone or whatever.

I'm reluctantly making this global such that new members see it before they try to sign up.

If you do not receive your activation email, send one to me (with your username in it) at "fred dot cooke at gmail dot com" and I will fix it for you.

Fred.

At our old forum people wrote that can't register here. STC them has registered manually.
I somehow managed to register automatically. There can be because my e-mail on google's services.

Yes! Exactly! I feel bad for making STC do that. Everyone that registers does register, but their accounts are not enabled. The only way they can do that is via the email that mail.ru and other providers (kind of rightfully) filter. Google's spam filtering is more sophisticated and does not filter purely on things like that. Please pass on my apologies to anyone that had to wait at all. Also mention that anyone that tried to sign up now has their account activated. Thank you for your post!!! :-)

I can probably help if you're using sendmail (yay!), postfix, or even qmail - but I might prefer to shoot you if you're using the latter. However it looks like you may have just moved over to google mail instead??

I was trying to use exim, but perhaps that was a bad choice? From everything I read it *seemed* like a good choice. i have setup the google mail account and just need to put the details into the forum software, BUT, that doesn't solve similar issues for all the other sites hosted on this thing, so if you are willing to help me (preferably in the next 3 weeks before I'm outside of local calling zones...) then I'd be MOST grateful! Thanks for the offer! :-) It's just not something I can afford to spend any time on, hence asking for help instead of getting stuck in...

OK, this should be fixed now, if some of the Russian users who needed help signing up could pm each other, to test this, that would be good, thanks!

Fred.

It wasn't, but it is now. I've been watching various were-a-problem email addresses succeeding for the last half an hour or so. Russian ones included. De stickying now.
