New Users Now Limited

Post by Fred »

Due to bad behaviour by bots (love the alliteration) new users get put in a group which limits what they can do until they have posted some number of times. Among other things, this prevents bots and third world human spammers from using PMs to spam. I know this is a problem on other boards, and I suspect it is one here too, though I have not had any complaints yet.

If you're a new user, you can get your post count up by introducing yourself in this thread and putting up a thread on each of your cars of interest in this section.

This got tested overnight! :-)

A spammer signed up and posted in the SECU-3 section and another feature exposed itself. New users also get their posts approved before they are visible. I don't particularly like the idea of that, as I would prefer genuine people could post straight away, but it keeps them from using this site as an advertising medium, and it prevents everyone except me from seeing and being inconvenienced by them.

I just removed that user and his single post about leather hand bags with just 5 clicks!

Genuine new users who happen to read this can send an email to the address on the contact page introducing themselves and asking to be pulled out of this group from the get go.

I'd like to use two forms of anti spam, some sort of human turing test and a capture, that would rule out all except for the indian/chinese spammers. But for now, this'll do.

Someone genuine had their post restricted this morning, I don't like that :-/ Beats the alternative, though.
