Zyliss ProFi King Plus Z-Vice Z-Vice2 10in1 Oz Vice - videos

Post by Fred »

Trying to assemble various takes on instructional videos for this weird contraption as I just picked up an original old top of the range Swiss made one for myself :-D

The first 5 links are all super infomercial style! :-D

First 4 are very similar, but ozzy guy is getting a bit old and can't focus properly. Kiwi guy looks unhappy/mean, but is better at the demo. NZ2/NZ3 are very advertising style.

NZ2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_GIjoxUP1g
NZ3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GWbBB350LI
UK voice over "system workshop" SwissRex interesting variation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHU-xmPYPjM
An old American: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_J35OpchLU (bad)
Another American: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eHFMokYF4U (bad)

But it's an 80 year old design, and the one I got is the original, top of the line, Swiss made, made in Switzerland, Zyliss ProFi King Plus :-D

Pics later in the weekend once I have it in hand.

/me can already feel everyone shaking their heads at him...

Got it. And it's actually pretty sweet! My one is 1991 vintage, 28 years old, bag of screws unopened! Almost unused. Save a little wood dust at the base of one jaw, you'd think it was brand new. Effectively is.

I will be using this quite soon in the upside down style clamped to a saw stool to hold the kiwla decking while I belt sand it. Perfect :-)

The original vise patent was filed by Zyliss (Originally Zylyss) founder Karl Zysset in 1957. Karl, a bicycle mechanic, is most famous for having invented the garlic press.

The story of this vise is very interesting. I have read, but have not been able to verify, that it was originally designed for the Swiss Army as a highly portable vise. As you noted, over the years nearly identical vises, some with additional features, have been marketed, such as Grip Master,/GripMaster, Vunder Vise, Z-Vise and Z-Vise 2, OZ Vice, Extra Pair of Hands, Mr. Strong, and Bosch SPV-200. I am not sure if any are licensees or if they are all clones.

Here is another video for your list. These are clearly not of the same finish quality as the original Zyliss with visible grinder marks where Zyliss was polished.

Thanks for that! Interesting history :-)

That video Mr Strong unit is a bit different with the two piece drill holding jaw rather than a separate accessory to do the same.

I haven't used mine much since I got it but I have used it a bit outside for holding a large piece of steel pipe for grinding while clamped to the side of a saw horse / saw stool, and for that, using the lower pipe jaws of the main jaws, it was excellent.

I intend to make mine part of my boat lightweight tool kit, or get another dedicated to life on the boat. Another part of the kit will be a set of Milwaukee M12 compact tools of various types, but definitely enough to cut a piece of plywood to match a hole and screw that patch over a hole in a worst case scenario.

Inspired by seeing a Record number 1 in the engine room of a small yacht recently and by the amount of work I had to do on our recent trip away to keep the thing going :-D

Cheers!
