Stood up so the milky CRC/water mix can drain and dry out, covered most holes: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 1724892162

Next up:

1) Debur and weld plates over holes in housing, leak test with petrol or meths or something thin
2) Debur and derust the free-wheeling spool
3) Clean more muck from rear cover and/or housing - had a good crack tonight, but more to go
4) Paint any bare or rusty steel with black zinc of some sort
5) Reassemble with RTV for back cover
6) Reassemble the brakes

Then I can pull the G80 axle from the caravan and install this contraption! :-D

After which the G80 can go into the 740 sedan and spin some sweet donuts :-)

Can't wait!

Waterblasted the rear cover and entire housing, inside and out, re CRCed the insides and machined faces.

Thought the cover hadn't come up too well, until I checked out the before photo just now, so I went and shot a couple of afters: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 8810004481

Nearly there! Just welding on of the cover plates, and cutting out of those plates, a bit of cleaning, a lick of paint, and reassembly!

Tonight was deburring, derusting, recleaning, and reoiling. Now living inside instead of precariously out the back: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 1368571904

This is tremendous work, Fred. It's precisely this sort of performance improvement that I don't see anywhere else and have a great appreciation for.

Is that a veiled way of saying it's a complete waste of time? If not, it likely should be, but I don't mind. The "gainz" are real, even if they don't really matter much. It's mostly about the weight, but also about lower friction.

More done last night, none tonight, last night's work:

A little progress, in fact, it's basically ready to install minus light-weight gear oil, disks/drums, and unable-to-be-used calipers:
