And now there are matching wheels to go on this when being towed by the 740 sedan: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 4894592000

At least 1 is in great shape. At least 2 are not. I did not check the fourth, but I may need to get some professional help to restore them a bit. Might put the best of 8 on the car, and the second best two on this, and the worst two for drag racing duty :-)

Got this: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 3844286465

Shows some places that I hadn't thought of that I can get weight out of :-D

Bought some glue and paint: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 5150045184

Yep, nothing else done. :-p Maybe later next week after I get some urgent stuff done I can seal up the front of this thing ready for a relocation.

Finally sealed up the front of this in a light-weight manner. Aluminium tuna cans! Tin snips, construction adhesive. Done! Overcoat with matte black and no one will know there are holes all through it like swiss cheese.

Inside drivers/right side: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 5554856960

Outside with one light coat of black: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 4457476096
Weird bit of underseal: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 8418821120
1/3 black interior too: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 4084624384

Tomorrow:

1) Buy more of the glue for another project
2) Buy more of the paint for inside and consistency on the front
3) Spray lots more paint on the front and inside
4) Put bits of interior back together again
5) Think about where to stash the thing

So I set about scotchbrighting all the loose stuff off, and then coated all of the alloy surfaces with the construction adhesive, then resprayed, and now it's all good.

I also got the insides finished. In the process I found this: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 1917134850 and https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 0173084672

Amazing, a blister of underseal bubbling up to reveal rust, who'd 've thunk.

And this is the new matte black interior: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 9381771264

perfect for being subtle when nosey are window browsing, and also good for warming up the thing quickly to avoid moisture and rust, though it's pretty well ventilated through the bottom, still.

Finally, without the guards on, there was one line-of-sight straight shot into the cabin, so I covered it over with a little alloy and some more glue: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 3470799876

So now there's just three leaks left:

1) Left inner guard vent leads water in at the lower end. This shouldn't happen, bad seal or out of shape from crash or some such. Fix with sealant, perhaps.
2/3) Wing mirror mounting holes. Need to make up some sort of lightweight covers for them and attach.

Bonus: The seals on a couple of the doors are torn, however I've not seen this matter, yet.

1, 2, 3 are next on the list of things to do to this. Once those are done and I buy a lock for the drawbar, I can find it a home on the street somewhere and never sleep well again worrying about it. But at least then I can have a car that I use and/or care about and/or want to work on, in the driveway! Hooray.

Once I fix my budget I'll work on phase 2, the flattened floor and handbrake relocation. I might also do some diff/axle changes at some point, too, irrespective of budget.

So, last night it rained HARD and blew pretty hard, too. The wing mirror holes didn't leak at all, from what I could tell, and the inner guard vent just seeped a few drops in throughout the night. While I was out there I thought "stuff it, I'll take a look at that now" and did. I found this: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 0650385410

That sneaky little blob of seam sealant had been causing a leak since the car was brand new in 1990! And now it's gone, and to make up for any slightly warped shape and the little dent that had persisted in the rubber seal after 26 years, I put a little grey RTV along the bottom edge and up the sides slightly. Shouldn't leak at all, now!

I'll have to sort out the door leaks and reinstall the trim panels etc before I put it out on the street, but it's now fairly water tight and very well ventilated (through many many holes in the floor, sills, etc).

While I was there I blasted the hell out of both sills with the hose and got a few leaves and silt and junk out, so that should dry up and stay dry pretty well now, too.
  • Wing mirror holes/covers/trim
  • All other trim back in
  • Dash back in
  • Handbrake relocate
  • Buy trailer lock(s)
  • Clean up pair of new wheels
  • Fit new tyres to new wheels (max PSI)
  • Fit new wheels to caravan
  • Put on the street, probably behind the 740 with freshly installed tow bar setup.
No idea when, but there's a 240 sedan waiting to come home that needs this spot.

Pissed down again earlier today, and WRONG, still leaks. So I might have another crack at sealing it with RTV, or just give up for now, and seal it with steel or something else, later. Oh well. It wasn't much water, just a few drops, but...
