Designed to go into a storage room through the doorway. It's not in the final resting place yet. Final resting place has old stained carpet which I intend to not stain further so I need to get some zinc primer on it first :-)

Welding complete:

Zinc priming almost complete, but I ran out of paint...

https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 7942022145

Tomorrow it'll be complete and go into service, hopefully! The other one can stay as parts for a little while, I think... Other stuff needs my love in a big way. I guess I can casually prepare the parts into less parts in dribs and drabs prior to final welding. Then when I'm ready weld it all together and paint it as quickly as possible.

Time to try to clean my hands, and then the rest of me!

Painting complete! Just needs to be carried into position and have the plywood slotted on! Destination is cleared and ready for landing: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 9406136321

EDIT: Edited the post on costings on the previous page, in summary, 400nzd each set of shelves. 720 for the commercial crappy equivalent in 6 pieces instead of one.

Spent today putting the second one together. Nearly done. Just centre shelf supports to weld in, and unnecessary welds to do at the ends (I want to...). Then paint, then installation and use! Will be so nice to have everything squared away! :-) The other one was completely full after less than an hour a day after installation. It was immediately obvious that I needed to finish the other one and get it populated, too. Too much on the first one right now makes it quite a bit less usable/user-friendly.

I notice you dont use any diagonal bracing.. are you fixing these to a wall or is the metal stiff enough to compensate?

They weigh a fair bit, and once loaded will not move at all. If you dropped one end ways from any height, you could probably bend it, assuming no plywood was locked in. With the ply in place, though, it's well braced diagonally. In fact, I made this one a bit crooked in that respect, and squeezing the ply in took some effort. Getting it out again was also difficult. So yes, it's pretty stiff. The 30x30x3 angle at the ends is welded all the way around, so that creates some stiffness in terms of diagonals. And given how many of those there are to bend in any given direction, it's actually pretty strong just by existing. And finally, the only load it's under while in use (and not transit) is downward, which it's plenty strong enough for :-)

All but done. Just a lick of paint on the other bottom side in the morning before work, and I can install in the evening and load up.

I felt pretty sick after spraying it tonight, though. Woops. Blocked all the vents the other day to keep warm, and couldn't open the door due to noise. Got pretty solventy by the end... :-/ Recovering now, though. Bed soon, brief sleep, and back at it.

I would expect the metal to be stiff enough, but I was just extrapolating from my own experience with less solid shelving.
We have the cheapest crap shelving in the 'office' of the lockup I share with friends and use that for storing paints and other
such bottled/canned supplies. If the floor was flat and you never needed to move things around it would be fine, but neither
of those things is true so it oftentimes sways in horizontal directions. For parts storage we all use cheap wooden Ikea shelving
which is a lot better, that system happens to use diagonal wire braces.

The original one that I was given was built for use on the road by film crews and apparently they're pretty abusive to gear. Those ones have the plywood riveted down and would be significantly stiff in diagonals as a result. I could rivet mine, but ruggedness on the road is a non issue for me, and they are jammed in pretty solidly regardless. I should and will rivet the top one, as nothing holds that still except gravity and luck :-D

Second set is in place opposite the first and organisation is underway! :-D This project is officially complete! Tidy the garage project is only part way done, however! Might do another hour tonight, or might spend it tidying something upstairs, instead. Pretty happy with how this has turned out. Space usage is way more efficient now. The top shelf allows stuff to be stored between the beams of the upstairs floor, which is in thorough use already. That's a fair bit of stuff that was previously just laying around random places. Now, that table project... I have a few new ideas for that!
