Most likely ALWAYS clean off ALL paint and oxidation if you want good penetration and a strong non porous weld?

I painted the whole lot, 600C zinc under, and vht flameproof over. you just have to clean it off before welding. The 600C zinc is nice, when you weld close to it, it doesn't burn away, it melts on and hot tank galvs the part :-) If you ever tried to weld zinc though... don't try...

Yeah, whatever coating was used on this downpipe had etched itself into the metal. When I was learning to weld, I tried welding aluminum DC- just to see what would happen. Welding this downpipe back together was like that.
